Play.com Review

With three number one singles amongst its 11 tracks, Tongue N Cheek is the much anticipated fourth album from British rap/hip-hop sensation, Dizzee Rascal. Having gained huge recognition for his 2003 debut, 'Boy In Da Corner', followed by 'Showtime' and 'Maths + English', the explosive Londoner excels in a new mainstream direction with Tongue N Cheek.

  • Opening with the boisterous 'Bonkers', the catchy three minutes offers a clear indication of Dizzee Rascal's progression to fully-fledged pop icon. With catchy hooks and a highly rhythmic beat, the track glitters with a US house vibe, resulting in a genuinely uplifting slice of dancefloor magic. Part of the unique appeal of Tongue N Cheek is the diversity, aided by a scattering of guest producers throughout the record. Madonna/Lily Allen producer Aaron LaCrate's influence is particularly welcome on 'Road Rage', a cheeky three minutes about Dizzee's early experiences of driving, whilst Shy FX (aka Andre Williams) helps add a reggae feel to 'Can't Take Me No More', which triumphantly samples Aswad's 'Warrior Charge'. But for all the glossy production, it's Dizzee Rascal's unrivalled lyrical ability which steals the show - whether he's concerned about the credit crunch on 'Dirtee Cash' or simply enjoying his successful lifestyle on 'Money Money', the Londoner never fails to deliver with equal levels of both substance and wit. Inevitably, the singles are standouts - 'Dance Wiv Me', featuring electropop sensation Calvin Harris, is a return to the old school grime long-term fans are likely to revel in, whilst the bouncy slice of summer sunshine smash-hit 'Holiday' is simply a great pop song. The breathtaking energy throughout Tonge N Cheek briefly cools in the soulful'Chillin Wiv Da Man Dem', before the booming bassline of 'Bad Behaviour' brings the album to a storming conclusion.

Having released four albums in six years, it is evident that the UK's most successful rapper is keen to progress as an artist. Edging away from his early grime roots to introduce alternative dance and house influences to compliment his gifted way with words, Dizzee Rascal has produced Tongue N Cheek - arguably his finest collection of songs to date.

Production isn't too bad, but lyrics....... Very poor !! Since he has made it '' big '' he has just become lazy , not really the dizzee that first amazed people with intellegent lyrics from boy in da corner . 3 Out of 5 ( just )

     Balancing Act

    | | See all Royley's reviews (15)

Dizzee has always been a well respected, original voice amongst english rappers, here he manages to balance the fine line between his unique sound and becoming more commercially accessible. To help he has drafted in a number of producers, amongst them, calvin harris, who has his sticky fingers over a number of tracks here - and these are standouts particularly the wonderful dance wiv me which just sounds better every time you hear it.
Dizzee still manages to enthrall with some of his lyrics too, road rage and dirtee cash (surely the next single and so funky it should be locked up).
So, a fine line between sell-out and commercial success has been achieved well here, interesting to see where he goes next.
A very good album, but if you are looking to buy your first dizzee album, start with the mercury award winning "boy in da corner" which has still to be bettered by dizzee or any other british hip hop act.

Dizzee's new take on hiphop/dance has took a lot of people by surprise and the fact that several songs on this album have gone to number 1 in the charts emphasises how many people have been won over by Dizzee Rascal, both in the UK and worldwide.

Yeaahh! Back again for the fourth round; hitting it hard this time. Much much better than his last record - Personally I'd recommend it to the hip-hop and dance fans. Lots of guests producer appearances: Shy-FX, Tiesto, Cage, Van Helden.. Get it!
