  • After British maestro guitarist Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple in 1974, he recruited Purple Records signees Elf as his backing band. And although Rainbow's 1975 debut was only a hint of future greatness, the album more than holds its own.
Elf was led by dramatic metal vocalist Ronnie James Dio, who seemed to connect with Blackmore in quite a chemical fashion. "Man on the Silver Mountain" is prime material, as is the six-minute blues-metal classic "Catch the Rainbow". Dio's shining vocals, shown to great effect here, have been emulated by hard rock vocalists throughout the years. "The Temple of the King" is another highlight, showcasing Blackmore's emotional guitar licks. "Sixteenth Century Greensleeves" is the group's ode to mediaeval times. "Still I'm Sad" is an instrumental jam that closes the album. Blackmore's fretwork, while speedy, comes from the heart. Although Rainbow's incarnations would change through the years, the drive and energy of the original lineup holds a special place in hard rock history. A worthy purchase for the connoisseurs of the genre.

Top 100 Music Reviewer

I've had this for few days and i must say it's an awesome classic metal album. At first when i heard i thought it sounded a bit too much like deep purple with dio as vocalist but i still liked it. After a couple of listens i realised it's not it's a bit heavier then Deep purple. This being the first band Ronnie James Dio was in & Ritchie Blackmore(from Deep Purple) makes this an awesome album. On to the tracks all tracks are great my favourites would probably Man On The Silver Mountain, Black Sheep Of The Family (because i'm the black sheep of my family), Catch The Rainbow(Sounds alot like Iron Maiden's Strange world I know this was like 5 years before maiden but just like to point it out), The Temple Of The King, Snake Chamber & Sixteenth Century Greensleeves. A great and a great buy if you want to get into rainbow and a great bargain €6.99. HAIL RONNIE JAMES DIO!!!!!!!!
