  • After a two-year recording gap (the longest in their recording career up to that point), Led Zeppelin followed the rampant eclecticism of HOUSES OF THE HOLY with the embarrassment of riches that is PHYSICAL GRAFFITI. One could be forgiven for thinking of this expansive double-length set as Zeppelin's WHITE ALBUM. It's a great schizophrenic beast, the first side containing the most concentrated dose of pure hard-rock energy the band had delivered since their first two albums, and the second showing off the more subtle nuances of their talent.
  • This is really Jimmy Page's album, from the masterfully moody Eastern setting of "Kashmir" to the poignant liquidity of "Down by the Seaside" and the furious riffing of "Trampled Under Foot". The 1950s-style rocker "Boogie with Stu" (featuring Stones pianist Ian Stewart) and the rural romp "Bron-Yr-Aur" add yet more colours to the spectrum of what may be the most emotionally satisfying album in the Led Zeppelin canon.

If previous led zeppelin albums had brought about a delivery and sound of blues and folk orientated rock music previously not heard then physical graffitti moves just a little left of heaven. It simply represents the finest collection and balance of zep material to be sampled. Right from the start with the no nonsense riff of custard pie, the driving rythm of base and drums you are left feeling this album means business. The mood and darkness with which both The Rover and In My Time of Dying are delivered only confirm the listener is in for a hec of a journey. The slide guitar on In My Time Of Dying is simply quite sensational, it also provides Plant with un parralelled liberty to express the fusion of rock and blues in manner like no other (breathless) . Some welcomed respite comes from the much under rated and understated Houses of the Holy track before the journey speeds up again with the funky full throttle driving sexually charged Trampled Underfoot driving music at its best. Kasmir which follows is probably Led Zeppelins finest moment which is a monumental achievement given the level of attainment that had already gone before this album. The anthemic arabic rythms, melded with Plants seemingly enhanced laments and screams creating the sense of travel and discovery. This conludes disc 1 sides 1/2 in old money (vinyl) when i first had the pelasure. The next track In The Light begins with real mood very slowly almost as if you need to recover from the excesses of the previous 6 tracks, yet in no time at all the Page Riff and Plant wail create a melodic force that has its light and shade moving from thumping riff to subtle interludes from jonesy on keyboards. Brony Aur (Golden Breast) really is time out let the sun rays hit your face beuatiful gentle accoustic instrumental. Flashes of Plants honey drippers in the intreaging Down By The Seaside with Country overtones. Before going on to Ten Years Gone. With Plant at his most magnificent the textures of the pages layered guitar playing, as the mood goes from the deftest of ontros through into a driving riff before climaxing and repeating, such an enjoyable song where will it all end. Night Flight see's zep spring onto the front foot with up beat high tempo light rock number, before reverting to type agian in the Wanton Song with mood darkness and grinding energy in abundance. Still to this day not sure what Boogie with Stu is about but i keep listening. Black Country woman sees zep back with a more folky feel which provides a unique simplicity for the Plant wail and lament to be show cased with some not to undistinguised drumming from bonzo which always keeps the cause alive. The album signs off with Sick Again which encapsulates the Gut rock sound that is Led Zeppelin driving blues orientated rock guitar sound with emphatic listen to me drumming perfectly coupled together with base and ryhm like no other. Plant almost competing with the guitar for dominance as the yell is louder longer and higher all climaxing in frenetic finish that as if they have all just performed the entire album in one take and fiished with something trade mark in a heep exausted. If you only buy one Led Zeppelin album this must be it. It is no small suprise that at the time this album went into both Britiss and American charts at number 1 all 5 other previously released albums re entered the charts both sides of the atlantic. Enjoy, i did, i do and will for along time to come. If you only listen to one zep track it would be Kashmir what a journey

this Cd is genius , a nice blend of songs and really gets you groovin - from custard pie the opener to kashmir the zepp really have stood the test of time and it shows here - my personal favs have to be trampled under foot , the rover and house of the holy tho there is not one bad song on here - I listen to this on a regular bases and it really is a shame great music like this is no longer being created in modern day times - for me this album and hendrixs electric ladyland have to be best albums of all time

 Absolute genius

A fantastic album by one of the best bands ever! There aren't many double albums that don't have a bad song on them but this is one. There are many different styles to enjoy, and personally my fave tracks are trampled underfoot, kashmir, the wanton song and night flight. Highly recommended

Robert, Jimmy, John Paul and Bonzo Produced a double album that some still hold to be their best of all time. A fair amount of Physical Graffiti was composed of work-in-progress from their previous two albums, everything from folk ("Bron Y Aur") and blues ("In My Time Of Dying") to countrified rock ("Down By The Seaside") and funky rock 'n' roll ("Boogie With Stu"). "Custard Pie" and "The Rover" are monster guitar workouts and of course "Kashmir" is still a juggernaut of incredible power, showcasing Pages ability to produce some of the finest riffs commtited to music and bonhams prowess as a drummer. Rocks finest on form, sheer musical perfection.

 Masterful

Probably Zep's highest point in their career. Every track brilliant. One or two tracks taken from previous album sessions. Grafitti has blues, heavy rock, folk, balads and eastern influenced rock. All their albums are fantastic though. Kashmir, Rover, Custard Pie and In My Time of Dying stand out. One of THE best albums of all time!!
