Sometimes second place isn't such a bad thing. After the disappointment of finishing runner-up in 2008's X Factor final, London boyband JLS have bounced back and emerged as the most promising act of the series. Their self-titled debut album, JLS, applies the lads' sass and charm to 13 tracks of soul, pop and R&B. Winning the 'Best Newcomer' and 'Best Song' awards at this year's MOBOs as well as racking up a number one certainly appears to have done the guys' confidence no harm at all. Released just three weeks after X Factor rival Alexandra Burke's Overcome, Cheryl Cole's 3 Words and Leona Lewis' Echo, the album is taking on some big hitters and manages to more than hold its own with a stack of potential hits queuing up.

The fun kicks off with first single and number one hit, 'Beat Again'. It's this kind of trademark R&B pop tune that serves as a template for much of the record, bringing to mind tracks like Boyz II Men's 'I'll Make Love to You' - the first song JLS performed in week 1 of X Factor. Second track and new single 'Everybody In Love' takes the pop of 'Beat Again' and runs with it, starting out as an R&B tinged ballad before turning into a sing-along pop number as the band bump and grind their way through. It's the perfect follow-up and settles you in nicely for an album full of treats. Potential hit after hit tumble out of the speakers as you're quickly reminded that they aren't just a bunch of pretty faces, but can put a tune together too. Tracks like 'Heal This Heartbreak', 'Only Tonight' and 'Don't Go' cement the album's authenticity as a real pop contender and will have their X Factor rivals heading back to the drawing board.

JLS might not have taken top prize in X Factor, but they seem to have learnt that the music business is a marathon not a sprint, making one of the best R&B flavoured pop records of the year. It looks like being the first of many.

They're really donig well for themselves, two number one singles and a top selling album. I'm glad that both them and Alexandra Burke are getting on in the music industry, they're both really good acts. JLS are the new boyband on the block though and there's much more for them to achieve than Alexandra because there are a woeful amount of female solo artrists out there now that are dominating the charts i.e GaGa, Cheryl Cole, Little Boots, La Roux, Lily Allen, Beyonce, Shakira and so on, but this a good time for a young boyband to shine. Good luck to JLS.
