 Must have

Yet another musically experimental album from Gorillaz. The range of ideas within the sounds and the lyrics brought by collaboration with several other artists is inspired.

Many argue that Plastic Beach is nothing like the Gorillaz "sound" but how can that be if Gorillaz is ever changing? The only thing that connects the albums are the fictional band members and the unmistakeable drive to make good music; with an admirable disregard for the world of 'genres' that we have consumed ourselves with.

Fantastic I love this album, amazed how diffrent people have recived it. It needs hearing at least twice like all new albums, then you find lines, sounds, that just become you.As Ipswich said yes I get a strong 80's feel, I even hear some of the clash.when they use to go off the punk feel & go to a place far away, just maybe they wrote some of there tracks at plastic beach?.Give the album a bash be open minded & I am sure you will get the vibe of Gorillaz in blood it's a great place.

 Completely different.

Having listened to this album 3 or 4 times I now actually appreciate how good this album is. On my first listening I did think this is awful and what have the Gorilaz done? But as I have said I am really impressed. I would say however if you liked there old work, this album is completely different. It's still Gorilaz but this time more rap/drum and bass. On Melancholy Hill is my personal favourite! A big thumbs up for this album, roll on there next!

 Brilliant

I have to admit when i first listened to it i wasn't very impressed. However this album really rewards you for further, in depth listening. I can't get enough of it now. My personal favs are Empire Ants and White Flag. Who else other than Damon Albarn would have two british rappers rapping over the national orchestra of arabic music? To sum up you might not like it at first, but if you stick it out you should love it, i certainly did.

 Worst Album of The Year

Demon days was pure genius, this is just rubbish! Not a single good track! There recently released singles stylo and superfast jelly fish are supposedly two of the best tracks...I cant tell why...

Welcome to the world of the Plastic Beach

Well 5 years after the excellent Demon Days, Damon and his band of Gorillaz return to the shores of the music world via their third album, 'Plastic Beach'.
This time around the album does not offer the instant pop classic singles of last time, with the possible exception of 'Melancholy Hill', but instead offers a more varied, and in my opinion more exciting, album than ever before. Musically you could never pin it down to one category, with tastes of hip hop, r n b, rock, orchestral music, and of course the prevailing flavour of electro pop.
Albarn's voice has never sounded better, and the guest artists on the whole work well, with the best been Snoop Dog, Little Dragon, Lou Reed and Bobby Womack.
Overall this album is a grower and will not be apparent on first listen, but if this is the final we hear of Gorillaz, as has been hinted at, then its a worthy conclusion to this project.

 Album of the Year?

Very disappointed with this album. I've listened to the album a few times now, and I just don't get the feel for the album. I really do counter Q Magazines' "album of the year" view because in my opinion it is far from being a good album!

 The Difficult 3rd Album?

| | See all Dirtfish's reviews (452)

Traditionally the 3rd album from a band is regarded as the most difficult (Oasis - Be Here Now/Coldplay - X&Y) and Plastic Beach does indeed suffer following on from Gorillazs superb debut album and follow up Demon Days.

To be fair Plastic Beech is a great album with several stand out songs. Stylo is a great pop single, On Melancholy Hill has an addictive beat and Superfast Jellyfish is another favourite of mine.

Plastic Beach is probably the most 'pop' sounding album Gorillaz have produced so far. Its very easy to listen too and features some interesting cameos from Snoop Dogg, Mos Def, Lou Reed and Bobby Womack.

Its not far from being as good as its predecessors, in fact you argue its more easily accessible but it does feel slightly bogged down in the middle with some lumbering tracks.

Plastic Beach is a very good album with some great pop songs but it is still the difficult third album and arguably not quite as good as the first two. But considering the quality of those how could it ever live up to expectations?

 Not What I Expected!

This album did not follow up to its expectations. The songs are quite good when you hear them for the first time, but the songs are repetitive.

There are actually some tracks which are awful, including the debut single 'Stylo'!

I would not recommend buying this album unless you are a massive gorillaz fan!
