Well, after buying a couple of the stereo remasters, I took the plunge and shelled out on the Mono Box Set. I'd wholly recommend this set, for a start the packaging is simply gorgeous. The CDs are housed in miniature replicas of the original albums, reproduced to the finest detail. For example, the White Album is open at the top, with the poster and insert photos reproduced as original. Pepper has the cut-outs and all albums have repro dust jackets. The spines of the CD covers are as was, so too the labels, (Please Please Me gold on black etc....)
As for the music, well, it's simply breathtaking. Mono strengthens the power and unity of the performances, in Twist & Shout you can really feel and hear John's voice cracking up, something the stereo seperation lessens. In mono you can hear him really struggling. Then there are the differences in mixes of songs and indeed albums. Pepper is a revelation in mono, as too Revolver and the White Album. Fading in and out of songs is a lot smoother and purposeful, Pepper seems like you are hearing it again for the first time such is the impact of the mono mix. Some songs are radically different in mono. Helter Skelter is shorter and more powerful, as is Strawberry Fields. Don't Pass Me By and She's Leaving Home appear speeded up, and are better for it. It's like you've come home and somebody has re-arranged the furniture. The added bonus of the 1965 stereo mixes of Help! and Rubber Soul are very good too! A word of caution - some of the earlier songs sound marginally better in stereo, but I think that's to do with them being live performances and the remastering revealing the natural reverb of the Abbey Road studio.
If you can afford it - do it!
Took me back a few years listening to these in mono, when I heard Sgt Pepper for the first time in mono wow. this is a great buy worth every penny....go on buy and enjoy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Mono mixes were given preference at the time , and the early albums do sound good in mono ' but and this is interesting to me ' does anyone who has bought the Mono set listen with just 1 speaker.
i suggest try them with just 1 speaker then compare with the stereo mixes ' as its hardly authentic or the truth ' listening in mono on a stereo system is it ? .
Simply stunning. The attention to detail is breathtaking from the miniature record sleeves to the booklet and perfect box. It's a wonderful piece and I will gush to anyone who'll listen about how good the records sound. They're bassy and punchy in a way that they never used to be. You owe it to your grand kids to own these. Treat yourself!
