One of my favourite albums of the year although it did take a while to grow on me, once it did I was absolutely hooked! This is a brilliant album and very consistent. I must've played it a hundred times... (so far)... Now I can't wait for his next one!,,,
Totally agree with previous reviews, this is not what you would expect. That said it is a well written and executed album, thats songs stick in your head, has a really funky 80's electro feel to it.
In a word class!!!
I Like many have already got the album. It is not at all Strokesy in any way. If I am honest i Prefer Albert Hammonds Solo Album. But still you should have both. Another work of art from the genius that is casablancas. Don't be fooled by the low 8 Tracks of the album, There are more minutes on this album than the 'Is this It' Album and is truly worth the purchase. What else can i say. Any fellow Strokes Fans buying this album beware you are in for quite a shock but give it chance listen to it enough times and you'll love it trust me.
Long gone are the scruffy-haired, Stooges inspired New York sound, Casablancas has finally succumbed the trend of his band mates of producing a solo record, his agenda totally differing from what came before.
I assure you Strokes this is certainly not, and while his talent nor swagger has not left him, Casablancas is out to surprise with Phrazes For The Young. Whether he's jumping on the current nostalgic 80's synthpop revival band wagon is unclear, but what he's achieved in his latest offering is something undeniably catchy and fun, if not short lived in playing time with only eight numbers offered in total.
Phrazes For The Young provides a mirage of confusion with a wall of sounds somehow helmed together with the melodies provided by Julian, the electro influences merely a flamboyant icing on what is essentially a perfectly credible pop record.
In the shortlist of the more memorable albums of 2009, Phrazes For The Young thankfully reassures Casablancas' talent is still flourishing and was sorely missed by the industry. It's a solid return to form from the much modest master. Now bring on the next Strokes offering.
Music to make you move your feet and play air keyboard, enjoy
