Play.com Review

Safe Trip Home is the long-awaited third album from the London-born singer-songwriter Dido. Five years since the release of her multi-platinum second album Life For Rent, Dido returns with a mature album which is draped in thoughtful and delicate tracks that expand her wine-bar sound with shadows of a darker side.

Laced with finely spun melodies, Safe Trip Home is an emotion-filled body of work that encompasses the feeling of desolation and fragility. While lyrically themes follow on from those featured in previous releases in the form of longing and absence, the subject matter of Safe Trip Home is rooted far deeper than the caprice of romantic love. Tackling the difficult subject of her father's death throughout the album, Dido projects her carefully chosen lyrics with honesty and depth amongst the husky yet undeniably sweet tone of her voice. The production of the album comes in the form of acclaimed producer Jon Brion, Faithless member Rollo Armstrong, and Dido herself. Adding in a number of string arrangements that swell the sound to rather grandiose levels on songs such as 'Let's Do the Things We Normally Do' and single 'Don't Believe in Love', the producers have complimented Dido's distinctive cracked falsetto to epic proportions. While the traditional sounding pop songs still remain in tact in the form of 'The Day Before The Day', there are a succession of tracks including the Brian Eno collaboration, 'Grafton Street', and nine-minute closer 'Northern Skies' where Dido experiments with different musical genres and indulges in expansive musical landscapes and Irish vocal quavers.

Since her debut album, No Angel, Dido has consistently focused her energies on bridging the roles of singer-songwriter and art-song chanteuse. By finding suitable producers in Jon Brion and her brother Rollo Armstrong, Dido has evolved brooding, attention-grabbing underscores to create dreamlike backdrops that effectively accompany her voice and fragile tales to perfection. Demonstrating exactly why she is one of Britain's most successful solo artists, Dido delivers with a Safe Trip Home her most effective album to date.

Firstly let me state that I'm not a Dido fan per se, although having listened to this album for the past few days, I am of the opinion that this disc contains some of the most beautiful, well crafted songs that I've ever heard.
What Dido has produced here is a collection of heartfelt songs which clearly have been written whilst knowing that her beloved father was terminally ill.
Once you understand this it become obvious that there is huge poignancy in this album and anyone who cannot be moved by the beauty of 'Grafton Street' or 'The Day before the Day' clearly has a heart of stone.
Please don't buy this album if you intend to play it as a back drop to dinner parties or easy listening whilst driving.....this is music that deserves to be listened to without distraction.
This is a highly recommended album containing music that most of us are only lucky enough to witness once in our lives....Superb!

 Dido did it again!

Got this cd couple days ago, and i have to say this record is superb! Loved it from the beginning to the end. And on the second listening, it sounded even better. If you love previous albums, i'm quite sure you like this one as well.

 Dreadful return do not buy!

This is a stunning and beautifull album. May not be the happiest but it reminds you that dido is one of the best female song writers of our generation. Who writes straight from the heart...this is a must have and worth every star....

 Music from the heart.

At first listen I was left cold by this album. But after a while you get past the lack of strong sounds and beats and you realize that this is music with songs that truly have meaning. Most musicians throw their beats at you and tell you what to feel. But this album is subtle and asks you to really listen and when you do you see what a beautiful piece of music that it is.
