Play.com Review

Alternative rock giants, Coldplay, return to increase their global success with their fourth studio album, Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends. Investing the same hunger that has gained them multi-million album sales worldwide, Coldplay arrive back on the music scene with a host of new world tracks that emit charm and make up their most experimental record to date.

Since the release of their Mercury Prize nominated debut, Parachutes, Coldplay have dominated the charts with their soft rock. By sticking to a similar formula with all of their albums, from their acclaimed debut through to 2005's X&Y, Coldplay have constructed one of most recognisable sounds of the British music scene today. Viva La Vida, however, sees the band develop their style further to experiment with creative elements. The opening track is 'Life In Technicolor', a world-pop delight that in a mix of layered chiming and escalating beats erupts into the gothic 'Cemeteries Of London'. While the church organ led 'Lost!' ups the tempo with hand clapping and funky beats, the piano tinkling and strained vocals of Chris Martin on '42' sees Coldplay return to their established formula with a track that resembles their Top 10 hit 'Trouble'. As the catchy piano hook and guitar edge of 'Violet Hill' outlines a political message, the combination of slashing chords and violin bursts on tracks such as 'Viva La Vida' demonstrate fully the inspiration that the band have taken from cultural and musical influences to bring together this eclectic album.

Touching on different style elements, Viva La Vida is Coldplay's grown up album. By taking a new direction musically Coldplay have created a record that contains not only all of the sturdy melodies and universal themes that their fans have come to expect but adds interesting soundscapes to intrigue those less familiar with their enchanting music.

 What was Chris Martin thinking?

I love Coldplay, I have all previous albums and have seen them live many times. However this album is too obscure. Bar a couple of tracks, the rest is experimental, overly introspective rubbish.
2008 the year Chris Martin finally disappeared up his own rear end.

Although they're a good band, Coldplay could never be accused of pushing the envelope too far like Radiohead. Aside from slightly different production these songs wouldn't be out of place on any of their other albums. No doubt you've already heard snippets of the tunes on the TV ads, and so if you like that then go for it - the album has no hidden gems, just the usual consistent quality. The only real difference I can come up with is that on this album the verses tend to be better than the choruses, but that hardly makes a difference in the overall enjoyment..

It almost sounds like a criticism to say that all you're getting is the same album again, but it's not as it's a very good album. All I'm saying is that if you already own X&Y then you're just getting an extension to that, not a brand new, different sounding album that you have to listen to.

 Coldplay?

I have been a massive Coldplay fan since day one and have loved every song on every album.

I have listened to the whole album and I just can't make head or tail as to which direction they are going in. It almost seems like Chris Martin burnt out after X&Y's amazing song lyrics and stylings and has realised he can't surpass his last efforts.

It sounds like he's trying to take Coldplay down a different route with heavy, heavy emphasis on synth effects and a lack of amazing piano and guitar riffs, which Coldply are famous for. (all except Violet Hill and Viva la Vida, which still resemble Coldplay)

I am pretty dissapointed by this latest Coldplay album. I realise that people aren't going to like this review but I think once many Coldplay fans have heard the album they'll apreciate it.

No doubt the album will be the biggest selling of the year but apart from a few songs I really can't relate to it like the past albums.

The band have really pushed the boundaries of what we expect from an album, producing a beautiful, serious and sometimes testing 45-minute disc.

The attention to detail is incredible. You can imagine the guys obsessing over every note and word in this, their fourth album.

The boys have developed and evolved their song writing with each of their albums - from Parachutes, released in 2000, to A Rush of Blood To The Head two years later, then X&Y and now this.

Gatefold means the case is made of thin cardboard that opens like a wallet in 3 ways, with the lyrics booklet on the inside cover.

Parachutes amazing.
Rush of blood astonishing.
X&Y quite good.
Viva la vida rubbish!
If i wanted to listen to a band who wrote music with an inflated ego id listen to Oasis. If i wanted experiemtental id listen to radiohead. If i wanted both id now consider coldplay. Coldplay get with the old stuff. Guitars not Banjos. Music Lyrics not sesame street songs.

Im sorry but i returned this album its so bad.
