Having loved Green Day since the days of Dookie, and buying every album since, I consider myself a big fan. In various bands I've covered many of their songs, right up to a couple from American Idiot, and loved them. Even now, Dookie remains in my top 10 albums, and Basket Case still fills me up with emotion.
So why this atrocious mess of an album to follow the brilliant American Idiot? It was clear with AI that Green Day had chosen a new path to follow, but I don't understand how it led here. Like a collection of rejects from the previous album, there is nothing left here of the Green Day that once was. None of the songs particularly stand out, most of them are terribly derivative, and all of them are boring and uninspired.
I'm sure this album will appeal to some (from the reviews it clearly does) but Green Day were simply at their best before they started to have a "message".
