 Very disappointing

After a very radio friendly album "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb" and a very Beatlesque album "All That You Can't Leave Behind" a lot of U2 fans including myself were in desperate need for this next album to be a depature from that work. The problem is, it is but not in the way some of us hoped.

There are numerous problems with the album that just don't cut it, and don't 'grab' you like all U2 albums should. For starters the problem I find with the album is the amount of layers in each of the songs. Each of them seem to have to many sounds going on at once and therefore drown out some of guitar, rhythm section or Bono's vocals. Yet, on some songs it is the other way round and you find Bono's vocals for example being too prominent drowning out the atmospheric sounds of the song.

Other problems with the album are that The Edge does not seem to be involved with his guitar work as much as U2's previous albums. He almost seems restrained and again this might be because of the amount of layers in each song. Bono's lyrics also seem very basic and to be fair quite lazy and poor in comparison to his other work. Some of the lyrics at times are also absolutely ridiculous and very cringe worthy to say the least.

My final problem with the album is that the album doesn't feel like U2 at all. It feels more like a Passengers II album which they collborated with Brian Eno on. It seems too much of Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois' that it loses the distinctness that makes a U2 album sound like it's theirs.

Overall, I am saddened and very disappointed by this album and I hope U2 come up with something better for their next otherwise I can't see them staying relevant for much longer.

As a previous fan of this band's work i found myself very let down by this album.

The build up before the release led me to believe that this would be a distinct departure from U2's back-catalogue, in that respect i feel i was decieved. Indeed there are a couple of very different sounded tracks but for the most part this is par for the course for U2.

My main argument with this piece of music is that a few of the tracks are over-complicated and seem confused. While not BAD, these tracks use one or two too many layers of sound or too many words have been crammed into a line. In my humble opinion this ruins the flow of the music. The title track "No Line On The Horizon" is the prime example of this point.

A point of unoriginality must be made too, as upon first hearing "Get On Your Boots" it sounded far too much like "Vertigo" due to an almost identicle bass line.

As a said previously, there are some very good and different songs on this album but there are somewhat adrift from the rest of the music. I personally found the songs "Magnificent" and "Fez-Being Born" as original and very pleasant to listen to. "Moment of Surrender" is also a very good song and is a welcome return to what reminded me of U2's earlier albums.

Overall, I find this to be a distinctly average turn out for U2. There is dissapointment but also a few genuinely enjoyable tracks. As a U2 fan i'm dissapointed and i dont think this album will convert many who havent enjoyed them in the past.

This is a fine return to form! The trouble with a new U2 album is that it is only ever compared with other U2 albums! I think this proves that they are without a doubt the biggest and best. Clearly there is no other music worth comparing against this new material..........another classic!!!!

 U2 EPIC!!

Its not disappointing at all and well worth the wait. The songs are all so different. A welcome departure from the last two albums. This is music to fully immerse yourself in for an hour. Magnificent takes you to another place, its like Where The Streets Have No Name realised again for the techno age. Personally I have a great admiration for music with many layers, makes repeated listens so much finer. The vocal work is stunning on this album as is the edges guitar, he is soloing again!!! Where did that come from? This will be a massive hit.

Key Tracks

Magnificient
Moment of Surrender
Unknown Caller
White as Snow

Poor track

Get On Your Boots (obviously)

I've followed U2 since Boys release way back when, I've bought every album been on every tour since Boy and it pains me to say after listened to it twice how dissapointing this album is. Of the 11 tracks 5 are passable with the rest being filler & Bono waffling on. It's up there with POP I'm afraid.
Can't see how they'll get a reasonable tour out of this album either, there'll be a lot of shoegazing going on. Sorry lads!
