Play.com Review

Following the critical success of his Mercury Prize-nominated 2007 debut 'Panic Prevention', South London singer/guitarist Jamie T (aka Jamie Treays) returns with Kings And Queens, another sublime collection of innovative songwriting that defies pigeonholing.

From the electro beats and clear hip-hop influences of opener '368' to the subtle, classic folk of 'The Man's Machine', in the space of four songs, the wide variation of themes and ideas on Kings And Queens is evident early on. A complex thought process gathered whilst sat on a train, 'Sticks 'n' Stones' is a glorious slice of social commentary, comfortably tackling the subject of mindless violence in Britain in a fearless narrative that would make Joe Strummer proud. Single 'Chaka Demus' and the laid back 'Emily's Heart' are further highlights, whilst the world music-tinged rant of 'Hocus Pocus' deals with issues on a more personal level. Fast becoming the spokesman for his generation, 'British Intelligence' is a subtle but infectious rhythmic track highlighting the country's paranoia about living in CCTV-infested Great Britain, and possibly Jamie T's finest moment to date. 'Jilly Armeen', a gloriously modest ballad concludes the album on a quieter note.

Offering a frantic mix of indie, hip-hop, ska and punk, there are few artists who have the ability to match the diversity of Jamie T. What's more, the second album from the Wimbledon-born songwriter offers great substance both lyrically and musically, making the regular genre dipping seamless. As a result, Kings And Queens is an effortlessly wonderful record, both enjoyable and intellectual in equal measures.
