As a fan of Katatonia for around 8 years now, it's astonishing to see that unlike a lot of other bands, they just get better and better. Having been around for the best part of 20 years or so, they've consistently produced fantastic albums. From way back in their death metal days to their modern sound, it all comes together so beautifully time and time again.
The album has a whole medely of sounds, from deep brooding riffs, to subtle sound changes that only come through when listened to closely. The lyrical content is solid Katatonia at their best, I find few bands that are able to bring their sort of melancholy to an album without it sounding completely depressing. They have a brilliant way of making an album tie in together well like one complete soundscape that needs to be heard over and over again.
A must for any Katatonia fan, up there with the best of them.
It is unlikely you will hear a better slab of broodingly heavy melancholia this year.
From the juggernaut riff opening of Forsaker to the mellow and introspective 'Departer' Katatonia have excelled themselves and this album is justifiably being critically hailed as a masterpiece.
The sonic soundscapes created are nothing short of mesmerising and haunting, undoubtedly due to the emotional vocal talent on display coupled with the keyboard/synth ambience that is created on track like 'The Longest Day' which then unexpectedly transforms into a solid rifftastic beast of a track courtesy of some crushingly heavy guitar work which continues on tracks such as the broodingly malevolent beast 'Nephilim' and my personal favourite 'Liberation' whose chorus still resounds in my head as I am writing this.
The album does contain a sonic theme which is evident in each track but this doesn't sound repetitive as each track has its own nuances and twists which become evident in each renewed listen.
Also while it is melancholic it never becomes depressing or tedious but rather is THE perfect album for playing in the dark - Night is the New Day is a very apt title!!
I was hopeful that Night is The New Day would be a great Album. Luckily it turned out to be possibly the best album of 2009. Katatonia are absolutely peerless. No other band can convey Brutal power and astonishing beauty at the same time as well as Katatonia. This albums is Dark, Brooding, Emotional, Haunting, Beautiful. Pretty much amazing. I think they are probably the best band in the world right now.
This album is quite good, but in my ears i think it might be a bit dull.
I had hopes that Katatonia would try to make a new album with something fresh in it, this is just the same katatonia as the previous releases. So if you liked the newer Katatonia albums you will not be disapointed. I give it 4 out of 5 because of lack of creativity, and most songs have the same sound in it.
great, great, great album.........i love to have a few beers with the lights down low and chilax to this.
