  • One of the most exciting indie bands to emerge in recent times, US guitar experimentalists Midlake release The Courage Of Others, arguably their strongest release to date. Innovative yet accessible, the third album from the Texan quintet edges further into folk territory, a perfect showcase for songwriter Tim Smith's remarkable talent.

If you enjoyed the indie rock of 'The Courage Of Others' it' worth looking at these much underrated indie gems from recent times:

For their first album on Atlantic records, Death Cab For Cutie released the mesmerizingly beautiful Plans.

Hail To The Thief may have come at a time when Radiohead slipped from the commercial radar, but it's superb mix of guitar and electronic rock makes for an incredible listen.

With an unrivalled blend of piano, guitar, French horn, cello, double bass and many more instruments, Funeral by Montreal alternative dramatic rockers Arcade Fire is an inspiring, jaw-dropping release.

Top 100 Music Reviewer

Once in a very blue moon an album comes along that knocks you off your feet. This the latest offering from a band that brought you possibly the worst titled album ever in 'The trials of Van Occupanther', lousy title, great little album. The Courage of Others adds a new and even more exciting dimension to a simmering obviously talented band. Wearing their influences proudly on their collective sleeves (Tull/Fleetwood Mac/Fairport) Midlake brings a breath of fresh air to the staid and boring rock music marketplace. Soaring harmonies, gently distorted guitars and flute, it could have been recorded three or four decades ago, but sounds unbelievably fresh and contemporary. Have courage friends, this album is not a risk, its a classic of the twenty teens. If you enjoyed Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes, you'll swoon at this magnificent set of songs. Strongly recommended, album of the year? too early to say, but leading the field by a country mile (no-pun intended). *****

 Fantastic Album

A fantastic follow up to the critically acclaimed second album The Trials of Van Occupanther. This album combines the second albums melodic sound with the unique first albums sound to create again some truly beautiful songs

 Well said Tedman1

Wasn't too sure at first: there is, after all, a different feel to this than previous Midlake. It takes a few listens to get into, slowly lulling you in. But once you're there, as it were, you will be truly overwhelmed - haven't stopped listening to this since it arrived. Hopefully it has the same longevity as the Fleet Foxes CD . Favourite of the year so far. Wonderful - but let it grow on you.
