Play.com Review

Highly regarded as one of the finest, most intricate songwriters of recent years, Mark Oliver Everett returns under the guise of Eels with End Times - another sublime collection of personal, understated masterpieces.

In a similar vein to previous works, including the massively successful 'Beautiful Freak' and the epic 'Blinking Lights And Other Revelations', the latest offering from the Californian songsmith and his unique gathering of musicians focuses largely on the theme of broken love. Although recorded on a four-track recorder, End Times is far from sparse, with a mass of layered guitars, Hammond organ and a fine horn arrangement all backing the delicate, heartfelt material. Among the highlights, 'Unhinged' is a welcomingly unpredictable pop song, aided by the intelligent drumming of returning sticksmith Jonathan 'Butch' Norton, whilst the simple 'Paradise Blues' is the ideal showcase for Everett's gruff, distinctive vocal.

Although continually raising concerns about relationships, commitment and the future, End Times is littered with jaw-dropping moments of musical invention, the result is arguably the most accessible Eels album to date.

With End Times E has got the familiar Eels safety net out and lands in it perfectly. After a slightly different turn with Hombre Lobo, this record is back to the Eels we know and love. Although It covers little new ground, it does continue in all that Eels do so wonderfully well.
Again he plays on his heartache that's been his life's story and draws on some of his past and most recent emotional experiences and pours it out through his music. Whether it's romantic breakups, losing family to cancer and suicide, his music is once again laid bare for us all to wallow in.
Simplicity is beautiful, and in End Times we are given another reason to celebrate E and his songs. Take any tracks from this album and you will see what an accomplished singer/songwriter/musician he really is. It's difficult to pick any standouts, but The Beginning; Gone Man; Mansions Of Los Feliz and Little Bird are all worth a special mention.
I find it hard to say anything other than what a beautiful record this is. But what else can you expect?

 Simply amazing!

Bit skeptical as to how the Eels could have improved, upon this release however.. I was happily surprised. Absolutely love it. Eels have excelled themselves with this. 5*
