Play.com Review

Leaving behind an incredible legacy, which is arguably never going to be rivalled, Michael Jackson changed the face of modern pop music with a string of breathtakingly revolutionary solo singles and albums. From the raw R&B of 1979's 'Off The Wall' to the contemporary pop of 2002's 'Invincible', Jackson's creative output had been nothing short of astonishing. Hit-packed compilation Number Ones gathers the finest moments from an incredible back catalogue.

Opening with an updated 2003 edit of 'Don't Stop Til You Get Enough', this fresh reprise of one of Jackson's most popular early works is the perfect introduction to the flurry of hits that follow. The multiple Grammy-award winning 'Billie Jean', with its highly recognisable dance beat, secured the artist's status as an international icon, whilst 'Beat It', complete with Eddie Van Halen's distinctive guitar solo, is rightly considered one of the finest pop singles of all time. The shuffling R&B of 'The Way You Make Me Feel' makes for a gloriously dignified love song, whilst the hard rock of 'Dirty Diana' still comes as a welcome surprise 21 years after its original release. For all his amazing songs, no MJ compilation would be complete without 'Thriller'. With its dominating funk bass line, high-pitched vocals and extravagant production, 'Thriller' remains Jackson's signature track. Such is the power of the US superstar's earlier works, later singles are often overlooked when remembering the artist at his best. However, the remarkably powerful 'Earth Song', with its gospel and blues influences, and poignant ballad 'You Are Not Alone' have survived the test of time well and remain as bright now as they did in their mid-90's release. Fittingly, the final single Michael Jackson released in his whirlwind career was 'One More Chance'. The track, written by R. Kelly, concludes Number Ones on an introspective, but satisfyingly soulful note.

With countless award-winning singles, numerous number one hits and more sing-along tracks than most 'Various Artist' compilations can ever offer, it's hard to fault this 18-track collection. Deemed irreplaceable to the pop world, Michael Jackson's music will live for generations to come, and 'Number Ones' is the perfect reminder of the genius that created the soundtrack for millions of people worldwide.

whatever your understanding is of his troubles in recent
years, remember the music so many of us loved.
on stage he was probably one of the most impressive
performers of our time.
this album covers many of his greatest hits including the
'iconic' tracks 'bad' and the memorable 'thriller'(remember the video that went with the latter ? )
obviously because it's a 'no 1's cd,it also has one of the
greatest 'pop songs' ever penned 'earth song '
forget the troubles enjoy the 'music'

 my number one!! 1!

This album are the greatest hits of the late great pop sensation that was Michael Jackson who sadly passed away in June.
Buying this however is paying tribute to the legends' great music.
'Beat It', 'Billie Jean', 'Smooth Criminal', 'Earth Song' and 'Thriller' are all old favourites.
