It's hard to believe this album was released in 1989 and even then had been 5 years in the making as the Roses struggled making a name for themselves outside of Manchester. However when this burst onto the scene things changed.........quickly!! Ian Brown may not always be the best singer technically but he sure knows how to pen a decent tune!!! And this is his best vocal performance, swaggering through the 11 songs with effortless ease. John Squire provides trademark melodic and dreamy guitar licks, & the rhythmic duo of Mani & Reni keep things tied together nicely. I Wanna Be Adored is a brilliant rumbling opener, She Bangs the Drums is still as fresh as ever, Waterfall is a beauty.....the list goes on, leading to a superb climax on I Am the Resurrection where sparks are flying as the Roses put their foot down!!! All the album tracks are outstanding (John Leckie did a great job on the production of this) there are echoes of the Beatles, Stones, Byrds and the Clash. It's one of the best albums of all time, no exaggeration, let alone the best debut. A must have for any indie/rock/britpop fans.
