Not my usual cup of tea.im a rock/metal fan but this is as the previous reviews have said a twisted, dark, disturbing album worth a listen.standout tracks for me are "angel" with its slowly climbing air of menace and "teardrop" with liz frasers amazing voice bringing the song to life.great stuff.
Alot can be said about Massive Attack, but that they are optimistic and shining is not one of them. Their music have always been about the shadow side of life and brings forth the creepyness of damp, dark streets, desperation and despair. However, in between all this, you find a woman's voice who gives a small hope of redemption.
On "Mezzanine", this has been practiced to the utmost perfection. Of all the "darkbeat" albums I've heard, this is by far the one that keeps coming most often to mind. The atmosphere is brilliant, yet depressing. It gives you a certain feeling of humans living like cockroaches in a post-apocalyptic, industrial area, where they work in factories at day and go clubbing at night. Neon lights and fog are some of the visuals I get. The music in itself isn't necessarily so thrilling, but the combination of it all makes it so. One song might not do it for you, but the entire album will. This is a package. Remember that. You can't buy this album for just one song. It wouldn't do it justice either.
This in my opinion is one of the best albums to come out of the 90's. It was overshadowed by the whole britpop scene but Massive Attack held their own and this is my fave album from the four they've released to date. The first 4 tunes are absolute gems and were released as singles. 'Exchange' is an instumental track and sounds good. The next four after that are gems too with Mezzanine being a standout tune with its deep dark beats and vocals which switch from 3D and Marshall. Group 4 is another quality tune which starts off slow with vocals shared between 3D and Liz Frazer then the guitars come in and turn it into a darker tune. Exchage is a nice chillout album closer with simple beats and effects and with the soulful vocals of Horace Andy complimenting the tune very well. All in all buy this album and u will not be dissapointed.
