I own quite a few of DT's albums - and Train Of Thought is the one I like the most. Dream Theater's style of 'advanced showing-off', as I like to call it, is present in this album but unlike a lot of music that is technically brilliant, this is an album that you can easily relate to and get really into. It's hard to explain, but Train Of Thought is almost hypnotic - you never get bored of it.
If you are new to Dream Theater, this album will well and truly make you a big fan.
And if you're already a fan and don't have this album - for this price you really shouldn't think twice!
I listen to a lot of music of various genres, and I'd say that this is one of my top 3 best albums of all time!
This is by far Dream Theater's heaviest album and its definitely up there in their top 3. As I Am is a great opener to the album as it sets the pace that never really lets up, well, until you get to Vacant which is the slow intro to instrumental Stream of Consciousness. Each band member gives it their all and some of the music seems pretty impossible to play, especially the incredibly technical guitar work of John Petrucci and the insanely fast bass playing of John Myung. The Lyrics also hold a lot of meaning and James LaBrie's voice is amazing and fits in well with the rest of music. Even though each band member excels in their area, the band still manages to gel together as a whole.
Tracks that particularly stick out are This Dying Soul, Endless Sacrifice and Stream of Consciousness
Dream Theater aren't widely recognised, but this is one of their more accessible albums and I'd definitely recommend it to someone that hasn't heard much or any other DT work
DT put on plenty of weight for this release, and come up trumps yet again. Just 7 tracks, but all with an impact. The album starts at the pace of an express train, and only really lets up on the beautiful short piece "Vacant". Great riffs, great choruses, and superb musicianship as usual from all 5 performers make this another must-have album. The best track must be "In the Name of God", though a bit shorts at just over 14 minutes. If the hairs on the back of your neck do not stand up to attention on 10:02 you are NOT human.
Think of your favourite Metallica album - add intelligent lyrics and stunning musicianship = Train of Thought.
This is the best Dream Theater album to date. As a fan more of heavier music, this really appeals to me. Don't get me wrong, I love the earlier stuff as well as the more recent stuff, but this is definately their best. Buy it!!!
