The Classic ToN album - Highly recommended

| | See all Sentient's reviews (9)

Together with October Rust this album made ToN famous. All songs are great and the album is quite diverse in styles. There's a lot of humour a lot of atmosphere. it's less accesible than October Rust I guess but more so than later ToN albums. It's production is a bit raw here and there but that just adds more flavour.

First off, the track listing is totally wrong here, but don't let that stop you from buying a classic album.

After the dirty little album intro, Christian woman is an 8minute or so 3-songs-in-one epic and one of the band's best songs. Black No.1 never fails to get me singing along (although it is a little overlong) both of which feature some of Pete's best lyrics.

There are some chilled out little fillers in Summer Breeze and Set Me On Fire and there are one or two pointless skits between songs that show the band's sense of humour and a couple of songs that while they show a little more of their range, are basically naff (Kill All The White People and We Hate Everyone), then there's the super depressing title track (which Peter sings so heartfully) and another of my faves in Too Late: Frozen which has an awesome tempo change (so morbid!), a good almost poppy-sing-a-long in Blood & Fire and the dreamy album closer Can't Lose You.

Listening to the album as a whole is a good experience if you've got an afternoon free and the first two songs are classics you'll never stop playing. Overlong? Maybe. Self-indulgent? Oh yeah. Miserable? Very. If you're anything like me, suits your taste down to a T, right? An awesome band with one of their best albums. And Peter Steele's musical, vocal and even lyrical range is at its best on this album. Deserves a place in all good alternative music fans' collections
