Average rating (1 review)
Katy Lied is often the forgotten Steely Dan album from the seventies, but it shouldn't be. The songs are very strong and the contribution of Michael McDonald to the vocal richness is at its peak.
The lyrics are clever, whether in Black Friday "watch the gray man as he dives from the fourteenth floor"; or Doctor Wu "I was on the other side of no tomorrow"; or Throw Back the Little Ones "and pan fry the big ones, use tact boys, and reason, and gently squeeze them" - the album is a delight. The original recording was not great in Steely Dan terms, but like the other remasters, this one simply sings.
There isn't a bad song here though my particular favourites are "Rose Darling" (another great lyric as the narrator watches the dreaming Rose "I would guess she's in Detroit, with lots of money in the bank, although I could be wrong") and "Gold Teeth".
