With a title taken from a Kim Drexler essay on nanotechnology, this album's a bit of a departure from Satch's earlier work. With computer-based drum tracks and synthesisers courtesy of Eric Caudieux, there are weird time signatures and lush pads of sound to go along with the trademark guitar virtuosity. The new direction didn't go down well with all of Joe's fans, but it remains my favourite of all his studio albums.
The CD is a blast right from the opening track "Devil's Slide" (the name of a very twisty road near Joe's home in San Francisco). Even after seing him play things like "Borg Sex" live, it's difficult to figure out how anyone can be that good a player. Worth adding to any rock aficionado's collection.
