 The modern metal riff began here

This album's influence on modern metal cannot be overstated; hundreds of bands owe their sound to Helmet, and more specifically Page Hamiliton. Latter albums expanded their formula considerably, but Meantime displays the core ingredients at their most powerful:
huge (I mean Godzilla huge!) downtuned start stop riffs;
abstract ear splitting solos;
powerful, groove orientated drumming with an ultra tight
snaredrum sound;
angry, but controlled vocals.

The riffs are clearly the main attraction here with the well-known Unsung (best riff ever contender?) sitting alongside other less known bruisers like In the Meantime and FBLA 2. Indispensable.

 One of the best albums of 90s

Helmet's second album Meantime is definitely something of a heavy metal landmark, introducing a bunch of guys with short haircuits and wearing shorts and t-shirts going against the metal image. But that's least most impressive thing about Helmet here, Meantime is one of the best most influential records of the Metal scene from 1990s.

Just about every song here is a killer, with the possible exception of "He Feels Bad" but all the others just first class examples of intense hardcore-metal. The opener in "In the meantime" is one of the heaviest most intense pieces of music ever written, Page Hamilton's vocals are also very notable on it as its one of the most chilling vocal performances he ever gave. Other tracks on this album that are my favs include the aweseome riffed "Ironhead" "Turned Out" "Better" "You Borrowed" "FLBA II" and of course "Unsung" which is about as close to commercialism as they got. Helmet were firing on all cylinders here and most notable of course here is John Stanier who's drumming is just incredible, he really proves here (and on Betty) just why he is one of the finest drummers of his generation.

Meantime is a must-buy album filled with brilliant, powerful, crunching metal tracks. If you haven't listed to it yet, do yourself a favour and buy it.

 The best one.

The best and first Helmet album they did was largely ignored back in the early 90's because of the grunge movement.This you could say was the first taste of new metal and they are also credited with creating the stop start riff very worth getting if you like modern heavy metal,had an influence pretty much on every band onward.Also checkout the Soulfly version of in the meantime its awsome.
