When you first get this CD you will undoubtedly have the word `quirky come to the forefront of your mind. But this quirkiness is in no way a disguise to hide their lack of ability that befits many current bands. Oh no; the originality and individualism seen in this album is a breath of fresh air in both the ways the songs have been composed and in the way they are produced.
It may be possible to categorise this music as indie but there are undeniably subtle jazz influences in many tracks such as the laid back lounge approach in `My Life Story (which has been penned with some magnificent lyrics) or hip hop references in tracks like `Too Late, Too Late.
Mr Hudson and his Library never drift far from the laid back style, but to be honest, they dont need to, as these songs work well and individually carry something that keeps the tracks sounding fresh, whether that be an unusual rhythm pattern, overdubbed strings, or even unusual lyrics.
Its hard to pick out any tracks that really stand out as the whole album works so well. The recent single `Too Late, Too Late possibly does stand out as a nice catchy and bouncy track, and I have a real soft spot for `Cover Girl and `Bread and Roses, which are both wonderfully well written songs.
Im seeing them live next week and although not sure how they will recreate this on stage Im very intrigued to find out.
A truly magnificent album not only is this one for the collection, but one that will not be seeing the dust.
