There aren't many albums I can say changed my life, but this one I can. It changed my whole taste in music around when I brought it when it first came out four years ago, and it still sounds as fresh now as the first time I heard it. It's slow, rocking, depressing, beautiful, uplifting and whole other mix of stuff. Lanegan's voice is almost hypnotic on tracks such as 'When you're number isn't up', and 'bombed', but then he ups the tempo with tracks such as 'sideways in reverse' and 'driving death valley blues'. Lanegan's honest lyrics have a profound depth to them echoing Layne Staley's writing, which will make you feel sad but content about yourself at the same time.
Though Lanegan has produced some quality stuff after this with various bands, I don't think anything comes close to this.
