Steffin Merrit's extraordinary collective achievement (and yes there are 69 songs) is fashioned out of true purity a of spirit. He is one of THE most poetic lyricists anywhere today all imbued with a playful wit and observation. Part curious child , part philosophical sage and should be acquired by anyone actually interested in music
Anyone into Pulp, Belle & Sebastian, The Velvet Underground etc. should buy this incredible triple album, released back in 1999... Along with Neutral Milk Hotel's 'In The Aeroplane Over The Sea', this is one of the decades incredible lost classics. An essential album!
For me this is the greatest album of the 90's and criminally overlooked by mainstream audiences, containing (as the title suggests) an unbeliveable 69 songs across its 3 discs.
Lead singer and songwriter Stephin Merritt packs an incredible number of genres into the album from the beautiful 'Book of Love' (recently covered by Peter Gabriel and played in the final episode of Scrubs) and 'Busby Berkley Dreams' to the more upbeat 'Sweet Lovin Man' sang by fellow lead singer Claudia Gonson.
Quite frankly this album is an incredible achievement and while most won't like every single song there really is something for pretty much everyone on here.
