Another dosing of misery from The Drab Four

Definitely deserves a place among the most miserable albums in musical history, but don't let that put you off - the music here is incredible, as are the lyrics and the vocals.

Peter Steele's pain is really felt on this album and his lyrics, which are never sugar-coated anyway, really lay his soul bare on this album, the misery is relentless but there is so much passion in the music it's shocking.

White Slavery is a slow starter with low drone vocals in the verses and a sing along chorus most fans of this kind of music should be able to relate to. There are great, typical Type O tracks in All Hallow's Eve and Creep Green Light and a not-so Type O song in the Day Tripper medley of Beatles songs, which is different but still a belter - maybe the second best on the album is Everything Dies, with a calm and chilled panio-section for the verses and a heavy doom-laden ending but my favourite on the album is the next track Everyone I Love Is Dead, you're gripped by the title alone, I love the intro, the music never lets up in this one, great bass, great guitars and a haunting keyboard section toward the end.

Another great Type O album that goes back in the direction of alternative and steps firmly out of the spotlight they created for themselves in the more accessible October Rust with heavier songs and darker subject matter as Peter's personal life took bad turn after bad turn. One of the best albums of '99.

And that's heavy as in depressing. You could compare this album to October Rust but without the humour and much more serious. So it's still an excellent album but be prepared for the negative emotions it exhumes. Warning: Listen to it when you're alone but have someone who can cheer you up in the next room or something. ;)
