Stunning album -
From the opening track to the closing track this is an album that shows a band in its ascendency.
Black Tongue is a pure slab of groove ladden chuck along doom.
Curl the burl shows what Mastodon could do if they were Queens of the Stoneage.
A fantastic album and a suitable follow up to the might Crack The Skye...only thing is is where's the exclusive play keyring???

I want to love it but does it really delivery what we want?

This is not a band in its ascendancy. Occasionally you'll get a glimpse of the Mastodon I want to hear, but for the most part you'll find yourself staring in wonderment as you hear track after track of three - four minute radio friendly blandness. It is a grower though and songs like All the Heavy Lifting and and Dry Bone Valley might be enough to keep the album's head above the water. Disappointing follow up to one of the best albums in recent memory. It will stun you with its irrelevance and have you reaching for Crack The Skye with a tear in you eye.

Top 100 Books Reviewer

For me, this is undoubtedly the album of the year. It is a slight step away from the epic Crack The Skye almost back in the direction of Blood Mountain, but every track has something unique to offer. The opening Black Tongue couldn't be more perfect, and, as other reviewers have stated, Curl of the Burl is what QOTSA would sound like if Brent Hinds was involved. Other highlights are Dry Bone valley, SpectreLight, the synth driven Creature Lives, and melancholic The Sparrow. The DVD contains an all too short 'making of' documentary, and some music videos for Black Tongue and Deathbound (for some reason omitted from this verson of the album, but available on Deluxe as a bonus track). The keyring is also quite smart. Altogether a great package!
