This album features songs with a totally raw and raucous sound which you would never hear the like of again from Creedence Clearwater Revival, with only a hint of it remaining on their 2cd LP "Born on the Bayou", by which time John Fogerty and his band had found their distinctive swamp-rock sound.

Indeed at least one track, "Porterville", is supposedly here exactly as recorded and issued by the band as a single before changing their name from "The Golliwogs" and another Golliwogs single "Walk on the Water" has been re-recorded for this LP.

There are a few covers, which are excellent nevertheless, being the Steve Cropper-Wilson Pickett "Ninety-Nine and a Half", Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put A Spell On You" and "Suzie Q" (the latter co-written with Elaine Broadwater and issued in the US as a "parts 1 & 2" single spread across A and B sides), Here, as an uninterrupted 8 minutes plus, it is perhaps my favourite track.

This was an absolutely phenomenal debut album, even though the band had yet to find their distinctive sound. The only criticism is the short playing time of 33 minutes.
