A critique of 50 Words For Snow by Kate Bush
I have waited along time for this new Kate Bush album and have listened intently to it for the past three days. What I think of it is Kate Bush has become melancholy, her lyrical content is weak and unimaginative. Based on what are her defining benchmarks in British Arty Pop I ask where has that brilliant creative song writing mind gone to? Nothing is challenging here, in fact it is an album of what I would call B Sides. I do believe that any album track with a strong imaginative and evocative content that has a pleasing structured rhythm is worthy of a single release; but with this album I struggle. The tone and beautiful singing voice of Kate Bush is still there I can here it, I just wish the vehicle that brought it to my ears was as worthy as the high standard of work she has produced in the past. Perhaps the release of Aerial was the sign post Kate followed when putting 50 Words For Snow together. I will not stop listening to this new album, as perhaps it is me missing something in each of the tracks as I really want to like this as much as other Kate Bush albums.
Another classic from Kate.....pure genius...cannot stop playing this cd.
50 Words for Snow, her second album release this year after Director's Cut. The album consists of seven songs "set against a backdrop of falling snow" and has a running time of 65 minutes. The album features guest vocals by actor Stephen Fry and choral singer Stefan Roberts. Stephen Fry, Elton John and Andy Fairweather Low make guest appearances on the album. I heard the radio edit of the first single "Wild Man" which was played on BBC Radio 2's 'Ken Bruce' show on 10 October. The single, featuring both the radio edit as well as the album version, was released on 11 October. The New Musical Express's Priya Elan greeted the single with enthusiasm, saying: "For those of us who have been secretly longing for a return to the unflinchingly bizarre and Bush's ability to conjure up strange new worlds, 'Wild Man' is a deep joy." Listing to this album the quality is just fantastic. This a concept album as was disc two of Ariel, this no Hounds of love or Red shoes it has taken me three listens to get into the album, and although not as acessable as her other work this is still worth investigating. on a major plus side Kate Bush is one of the few artist who understands that music and till uses Analogue equipment which gets the full warmth and frequency range or the recording, it is a delight to listen to I wish all music could sound this warmand not be compressed to buggery, and this CD is a joy. (Adele your album 21 would have sounded fantastic if you had recorded it like Kate Bush).
Drifting meandering that, although beautiful, lacks her pre ARIEL songwriting skills. So I feel somwhat short changed. But I am sure her bank doesn't !! Sad but true. Still a great fan of her older works and her mesmerising ability with music.
I am soo excited for this album, and could possibly be the album of the year when it comes out. Kate is in a league of her own and people need to make a leap of faith and try something new and embrace the unique style of Kate Bush. The album is getting some of the best reviews of her career so this is a good sign of how amazing our winter will be with this album in your player!
