Top 100 Music Reviewer

I will start by saying that I have been a Dire Straits fan since the Making Movies album and consider Mark Knopfler a guitar god.
It has therefore taken me some time to write this review bearing in mind my obvious bias. However having listened to this album many times now, and heard some of the songs live in concert I now feel capable of making an objective review rather than a stars in your eyes type one.
Overall I regret to say that I found the album disappointing.
With the exception of Haul Away Corned Beef City Miss You Blues and Redbud Tree the songs are not up to the MK usual high standard.
Even the title song Privateering is nondescript and hardly worthy of that honour when you compare it to Golden Heart or Get Lucky.
You cannot help but get the impression that the majority of the songs did not cut it for the previous albums Get Lucky and Kill to get Crimson and were used as fillers for an album before the 2013 tour.
They are a mixture of blues folk and sea shanty types which to my mind are not his thing at all. Ok you could accuse me of being stuck in a Dire Straits time warp but I do appreciate some of the stuff that Mark has done since the split. Golden Heart Sailing to Philadelphia and Ragpickers Dream were great albums but things have gone downhill since.
Mark Knopfler became famous through his guitar playing and fans love to hear those trademark soaring solos and licks e.g. Sultans Telegraph Road etc. but these seem to have been replaced by the celtic influence.
Arrangements are dominated now by pipes flutes whistles and fiddles!
More and more of his guitar work is overwhelmed by the aforementioned as those who saw his recent concerts will agree. The greatest applause was reserved for the above two songs.
For example even Sultans was dropped after the London tour dates I think it was played just once more after that even though it is the most popular song he has ever written and performed.
Perhaps dare I suggest Mark could think about making changes to his support band and get back to the stripped down five piece band that thrilled us before. Although I know that MK feels that he should play what he wants and not what the public want this format has been there since 1996.
Let us have more of the songs that made your skin tingle and less of the ones that make you dozy!
To sum up. If you like his work whatever he plays then buy it.
If you have not bought one of his albums before then have a listen to his earlier work to see what I am talking about and maybe buy that instead or as well.
At the end of the day it is still a fine piece of professional work.
