     The best of rock

I think White Stripes are the best rock band in modern time. Every new album is better then the last one. Icky Thump deserves 5 stars because you can listen to it from the start to the end over and over again and never feel boring. I can't wait to listen them live again. White Stripes are the best rock band in these last 6 years.

     WORTH A LISTEN !!

Icky Thump is one of those albums which has all the right ingredients for an unforgetable compilation of songs, with Jack's vocals that make the White Stripes unmistakable and irresistible and Meg's improved drumming plus the catchy tunes that seem to come so naturally to The White Stripes. Even though Icky Thump falls just short of Elephant and Get Behind Me Satan quality, don't let that put you off as this is well worth a listen !!

     A lot better!

I've bought this CD and have come to the conclusion about 3 songs in that this album is infinately better than 'Get Behind Me Satan'.

The 'Icky Thump' album sounds like Jack and Meg have gone back to their rock roots that were left in their previous album 'Elephant', and have picked up fantastic (and somewhat avant-garde) songwriting.

The songs are powerful and thumping, and others a quite mellow and relaxed, and a few (i.e. 'St. Andrews') aren't all that outstanding.

Aside from this though, 'Icky Thump' is a great album to listen to. I recommend it.

excellent, better than get behind me satan

    1. Icky Thump: awesome, better than blue orchid. Jack goes insane (crazy guitar and comedy organ), but it works, unlike virtually the whole of the last album. partly sounds like their old stuff, which is very welcome.

    2. You don't know what love is: catchy, impressive solos. nice soaring upliftingness.

3....outpoor blues: easy listening; pleasant, obviously, but second worst song on the album.

    4. conquest: could be system of a down. once you get over this shock, it's a good continuation of the, er, Mexico theme (in that Jack says mexico in a comedy way in track 1) with a bit of brass. Jack, once again can just do whatever he likes.

    5. bone broke: much more like their oldest stuff, faultless. good riff, breaks down to some classic white stripes guitar. welcome jacktastic lyrics and sayings.

    6. prickly thorn: why do bands have to branch out? to be fair, they get away with the bagpipes in that it has a melody and they stuck it in the middle of the album.

    7. st andrew: the same as prickly thorn, but without a tune.

    8. little cream soda: good name for a song, but nothing special. skillful guitar, but scary in that it could be system again. "good" in general, but they are capable of more..

    9. rag and bone. best song on the album, as good as any of their old stuff. nice bluesy, garage riff as well as classic white stripes guitar and drums. i like the way the lyric sheet doesn't include all the improvised, coffeeandcigarettesesqe theatrical ramblings from Jack -"it's like a mansion! look at all this stuff..."
a few hot woos and comeons from Jack - give it to me!

    10. slowly turning into you. piano. very different, works very well where it is in the album. catchy

    11. martyr for my love for you: lovely song. you instantly feel as if you've always known it.

    12. catch hell blues: best guitar on the album, no one is currently as good as Jack. well placed in the album

    13. effect and cause: countryidity can't go wrong, though not spectacular

worth listening to, very promising. glimpses of their confident best.

     Great As Ever

The White Stripes best factor is that the variety in their music is huge. Their last album "Get Behind Me Satan" was an incredibly controversial album dividing fans after their phenomenal album "Elephant". Yet they still keep challenging us with new and different styles.

The lead song "Icky Thump" is variety on a whole new level, containing loads of instruments and even the music video was wonderfully made.

Not every song on the album is amazing, there are some exceptions "Prickly Thorn, But Sweetly Worn" which apart from the end has surprisingly no vocals whatsoever apart from the end. "St. Andrew (This Battle Is In The Air) " is also rather like the former track almost as if they are two joined songs but the style of the song is slightly displeasing. No song goes beyond the 2 Star mark which is a great start and a majority of the songs in my opinion get 5 Stars.

Even if you are not a fan it is still a rather enjoyable listen. It is by far one of there best albums along with "Elephant". Maybe the White Stripes were born to be successful.

I really like the White Stripes and this album is just as good as the rest. I particularly like track 2 "You don't know what love is." Jack is amazing when it comes to playing the guitar, it certainly adds to the enjoyment of the album. I would definitely recommend it!

Icky thump they have really done it this time!

From the very first bass drum thumps of icky thump the title track, you know this is going to be a journey into 70,s rock, blues, folk & even touches of psychedelia.
All the tracks have an accessible hook & in some cases familiar feel to them.
It is very hard to pick the stand out tracks as this whole album is blistering superb but if pushed i would go with the two zepplinesque cuts Prickly Thorn,But Sweetly Worn and Catch Hell Blues and Little Cream Soda (oh well, oh well) and check out Jacks vocals on Effect & Cause.
Jacks guitar playing is awesome with some of the best hooks & licks i have ever heard on one record as well as as his unmistakable voice and Meg's drumming as ever works so well with this stripped down sound.
The White Stripes have delivered their best album to date and i don't think they can top this, lets just Hope.
