Intro is o.k, (short and sweet). Track 2: Chemistry, yeh, I like this one a lot, gives a taste of how Unkle can adapt to different styles, a nice surprise through the lug holes! Track 3: Hold my hand, James on vocal, one of the weaker tracks on the album, his voice has too much reverb on it, sounds distand and wishy washy which is a shame because the guitars build up quite nice throughout this track, and your left thinking Track 3 and where is that Unkle sound and phat beat! Track 4: Restless feat. Josh Homme, here is the Unkle sound we all know and love, great vocal and wicked drums and rhythm. Track 5: Keys to the kingdom feat. Gavin Clark, one of two tracks featuring G.C. a bit repetative, sounds 80s and no Unkle punch, the flow has been stopped with this tune. Track 6: Price you pay, again James's vocal has echo and no feeling, slow tune with some nice piano, then picks up a little but not good! leaves you feeling this album could be so much better! Track 7: Burn my shadow feat, Ian Astbury, I like this tune, starts with slow strum build up, Ian's voice sounds great, bass guitar rough and raw with sad piano, then power and something quite well put together, the first taste of that surprise element. Tracks 2 and 7 the best efforts so far. Track 8: May day feat, The Duke Spirit, love the female vocal on this one, Blondie comes to mind on the backing singers though! Could this be the turning point of the album, suddenly the guitars are screaming in time to this movement, great stuff. Track 9: Persons and Machinery feat, Autolux, again sounds dated with the vocal, slow and predictable with some great xylaphone! What is happening! Track 10: Twilight feat 3D, nice beats good pace, solid track, could almost hear Ian Brown singing this one. It's this kind of track that made the first two albums so good to listen to. Track 11: Morning Rage, lot less reverb on James's vocal, raw sound, dirty guitar riffs, but can't help thinking that this all sounds a bit like Hawkwind 30 years ago, bass guitar is so like Lemmy. A good tune though, I like Hawkwind. Track 12: Lawless, continues the feel of the last track, which is something this album has lacked up till now, were in a flow and its all good stuff. Track 13: Broken feat Gavin clark, sounding like Fergal sharkey on vocal but it works quite well, this song has definately grown on me more than the others, nice drums and guitar (strummed and the solo). Could be the best moment of the album for me, save the best till last and all that! Track 14: When things explode feat Ian Astbury, slow strum/strings, quite a sad feel to it, time to reflect on what has been a bit of a mish mash of material to be honest, nothing truelly gripping, nothing here that makes me think "oh i must rewind and play that one again", but it is Uncle and I'm only on listen four, I just feel a little deflated and am finding myself reaching for there other albums to remember the good times at the moment. I suppose having so many guests on the album may have stopped the flow, its more like a compilation or soundtrack, some of the tracks remind me of cowboy films! I am a big fan of Uncle though and will keep with this album, if nothing else it shows they are diverse.

After finally getting the cd out of the Ltd Ed packaging(!), the first listen caught me a little by surprise, i knew there would be some guitars but i wasn't expecting them on every track. In some respects i missed the keys and strings that featured on Never Never Land (a classic), however War Stories does have a consistency and flow to it, and the beats and guitar combination does work well. This cd marks James Lavelle's vocal debut and i was pleasantly surprised; his vocals are not dissimilar to Rich File's and they work together well on Morning Rage. As usual there are great guest vocalists, Ian Astbury's tracks stand out for me, his vocals are less OTT than in his Cult days, and the melancholic, atmospheric 'When Things Explode' is a highlight (finally some strings!). An added bonus is the instrumental cd, a great soundtrack for late night drives. I've listened to this album a few times now and it gets better with every listen.
