In Silico

I have both this, Pendulum's latest album, as well as thier first album "Hold Your Colour".

"Hold Your Colour" has some brilliant tracks, "Slam" and "Blood Sugar" (I own the newer version) are two of my favourite, but unfortunately "In Silico" lacks any real anthem to compare to these. "Showdown" comes close but lacks the raw power that would make it a true comparison.

However all is not lost, "Hold Your Colour" was a series of amazing tracks but there was a disjointed feeling as the album jerked from track to track and it is here that "In Silico" makes a huge improvement. There is a much more mature and coherent structure to the new album that makes "In Silico" a pleasure to listen to as a whole. Rock fans will probably be more impressed with this album as Pendulum seem to have shifted further away from conventional D'n'B with melodies and lyrics playing a larger role in what are now much more songs than tracks.

In conclusion, as much as I love "Hold Your Colour" for its incredible anthems that will never cease to get me dancing, I think I prefer "In Silico" for its wholeness and continuity.

---Also, I managed to catch them doing a live set at Rock-im-Park last week and they were incredible. If you ever get the chance to see them, do it, because it was probably one of the best sets I saw all weekend.--

With the addition of a few new members, they've really been able to move forward with their music, and so what if they've added some rock and lyrics, the drum and bass is still there, maybe not so obvious as it is in HYC but its still there. They've opened up their fan base and added variety, something groups aren't too good at in our days.

1) Show down - something different, more rock but has elements of drum and bass, it's neither truly but is something new. 9/10

2) Different - some nice beats in there and the title explains the song really. 8/10

3) Propane nightmares - Kind of like a more drum and bass version of Knights of Cydonia by Muse. If you don't like this because it's not enough drum and bass I recommend you buy/download the VIP remix, much more of everything in there. 10/10

5) Midnight Runner - Something tribal and mellow jungle but still seems to be soothing in a way then turns into an adrenaline rush. 8/10

6) The Other Side - Something more relaxed but still in the style of Pendulum, also quite repetitive but I could still listen to it for hours and hours. 8/10

7) Mutiny - Mutiny made the album for me really. It's something completely new to me. You can still tell its Pendulum but its funky and a good mixture of synth, bass, drums and guitar and even a bit of vocals. Could easily dance to it in a club. 10/10

8) 9000 Miles - Rapid drum beat but has some soothing synth so it is a bit like calming jungle sounding, if that's possible. 9/10

9) Granite - The first song I heard before I even knew there was a new album being released. Fantastic in every way. 10/10

10) The Tempest - The longest and one of the best. I have to admit this one is more with the use of guitars but don't let that put you down; it's a great mixture of guitar and bass. Something maybe like Rock'n'Bass.

Overall, this album is something that people who are open about change will come to enjoy but anyone that wants to stick to jungle and drum'n'bass hardcore style, stick to HYC or another D'n'B group.
