I actually wrote to the BBC to ask them to produce another soundtrack, this time for series 3. Murray Gold's score for the (now) latest series surpasses the previous two series', and that in itself is a feat!
Currently the track listing is unannounced but here's the lowdown on some of the highlights of the music heard in the episodes....
Martha has her own theme which makes constant appearances throughout the series, especially when the issue of her love for the Doctor is brought up on screen. It's a romantic waltz theme played normally on piano and strings. This will undoubtedly be making an appearance on the soundtrack.
Episode 1 has a militant theme for the Judoon which will likely appear on the album due to the popularity of the creatures.
Episode 2 contains hints of Stravinsky, especially when Shakspeare's publisher is drowning in the street as an act of 'voodoo'.
Episode 3 features some outstanding versions of the hymns 'Old Rugged Cross' and 'Abide With Me' but they may not feature on the soundtrack. The Face of Boe's theme is developped in the episode and there is also some outstanding heroic music in the episode.
The Dalek episodes contained a song performed by the New York show girl Tallulah - 'You Put The Devil In Me'.
There will definitely be some themes from the outstanding 'Human Nature' and 'Family of Blood'. The turn-of-the-century story contained some gentle character studies and music to accompany them.
Episode 10, 'Blink', contained some intelligent horror music both brooding and, especially towards the end, exciting music. Even though the episode was a horror story, it was atmospheric and dark with a simple oboe theme circling around three notes, so expect some of that.
The epic music from the finale episodes will undoubtedly be featured so there will be a theme for the Master and the toclafane.
Hope this pre-track-knowledge review has helped. If you're a fan of either Doctor Who or memorable film music then I can't recommend this album more. Genius!
