Play.com Review

Swaggering, pounding and embracing, Dig Out Your Soul is the seventh studio album from Oasis. The early success of Definitely Maybe and (What's The Story) Morning Glory found the Manchester quartet gain a legendary status that has remained undiminished ever since. Dig Out Your Soul combines the fine work displayed in 2005's spectacular Don't Believe The Truth, with the brash, full-frontal vibe of their early releases.

The musical equivalent of a thunderstorm, opener `Bag It Up' is a stomping rock-out master-class. Coming from a band famed for creating rousing festival favourites is `The Turning' a majestic anthem complete with a 50-piece choir. Unlike previous releases, there are worthy songwriting contributions from lesser-known members of the band, with bassist Andy Bell contributing `The Nature Of Reality', a crunchy, blues-influenced number which although differs enormously from the fast pace of a majority of the album but still retains '60s influences which have become a staple of Oasis' sound. Guitarist Gem Archer is behind the psychedelic, Beatles-esque `To Be Where There's Life' but again it's Noel Gallagher who steals the show with the emphatic `Falling Down', a gloriously produced slice of confident indie-rock he has always been capable of.

Although now rougher around the edges, Oasis have once again produced an album of honest rock`n'roll, that excites the listener with exquisite riff-based songwriting and larger-than-life confidence. Nothing less than what we've come to expect from one of the most significant bands of our generation, Dig Out Your Soul is arguably Oasis' finest work since their debut.

Dig Out Your Soul is also available in a CD & DVD Limited Edition Hardback Cover.

No one will have expected great things from this album, which is just as well - but it does have a different sound and is quite a departure from previous efforts.

As with every album since their first two, there are quite a few duff tracks - but at least this time the bad songs aren't drawn out ballads, so overall it's less of a strain on your patience.

Think of the Manic's Know Your Enemy and you'll have some idea where Oasis have gone with this album. Noel may still be stealing tunes left, right and centre - but at least this time he's reached beyond his Beatle's back catalogue.

With all the lesser tracks neatly crammed in the middle it probably seems a better album than it is - if you listened to the first few tracks, let your mind wander and then paid attention to the end you could be forgiven for giving this 5/5. However, with the half-baked ideas and padding, overall it's only a 4/5.

I brought this album thinking it would outset the rest of the albums they made. I cried, and cried some moar when I found that it didn't. The one of the problems with this album that the lyrics is terrible and the use of autotune has made Oasis lazy gits.

again nothing to write or sing about

I have to admit I was loathed to buy this CD, as for me Oasis were just rolling out the same bland music seemingly without any effort recently. I don't agree with some other reviewers that they never went away, I think they are just the die hard fans for whom the Gallaghers can do no wrong! The last album for example for me had nothing memorable on it whatsoever. When this was down in price in the sale, thought I would give them one last chance. I was pleasantly surprised. This album has a much fresher sound, although it is still Oasis through and through. OK, still not up to their classic albums, but they have pulled their socks up and put together a good album.

 What can i say?

Very disappointed! I eagerly awaited this latest album, but i feel let down by it....it's not oasis's best!
