 AWFUL!

As a fan of Judy Garland i didn't hold out much hope of this being any good, and i was right!

The music, well the band is sensational as is all swing, big band/musicals etc but the singing!!! Well this man is tone deaf, he may well be brave recreating Miss Garlands legendary concert but brave is not enough.
His voice just doesn't suit the big band sound at all...there are alot of flat notes and strange mumbling of lyrics.

However the good thing is that the DVD contains the real thing..i mean Lorna Luft, Judy's daughter who sings a sensational Hello Bluebird, now thats an amazing talent..!!!!

Sadly this is great if you can turn on the kareoke button on your hi-fi to cut out the singing as the band is great, but with the singing...OUCH!

 The Legend..that is Rufus Wainwright

Not many people could replicate Judy Garland 1961 legendary concerts. But Rufus does word for word song for song ...The man is a genius if you have never bought one of his albums or God forbid you have never heard of him. Buy this album ,Your life will never be the same again.

 Awsome!

What a great album. I'm normally not a fan of concert recordings, but this is amazing. If you've got the dvd of the London show then get this cd of the New York show!

Top 100 Music Reviewer

I've got Rufus Wainwright on just now doing his Judy Garland shtick and once more I'm not getting it. I've mentioned it before, but I really feel that I should like him, but I'm totally ambivalent about everything he does.
It actually annoys me a bit.
It just doesn't grab me like I think it should.
I read the reviews and think "yep, I'll grab a slice of that" and then I feel unsatisfied when I do.
I've worked through entertaining interviews he has done in the music press and find him engaging and articulate. So I revisit his albums again. Then this just reinforces my opinion that he's the emperor sans clothing. Not bad, but not great either.
After witnessing him on the Jonathon Ross show I though I'd have to give him another chance. Once again I gave up though. That there must be something that I'm missing. I keep going back to this, but I keep thinking it must be me.
Then today I got his Judy Garland album expecting the usual road to Damascus moment, and as usual it didn't happen. The orchestra sounds great, as do the guests, but the rest, specifically Wainwright's performance, is pretty bland, dull and forgettable. Zing, zing, zing went my heart strings. Indeed they did not Rufus.
So why do I keep going back to his albums? Truth be told I blame Jeff Buckley. When he released Grace the music press, plus everyone and their granny, claimed it was the work of genius and I rushed out and bought it. After a week I gave up and wandered out into no mans land to say that he was the talent-less white elephant in the corner that no one wanted to admit to not liking.
A couple of years later I let myself be persuaded to give Grace another try. It was still rubbish. Same thing happened again and again. Then one day it clicked and I realised it was indeed a work of sublime genius.
So I keep returning to Rufus expecting to grasp something that I'm starting to think isn't there.
It's Jeff's fault and if he was alive I'd be having a few strong words with him.
Maybe in a decade I'll eat my words, but not right now I'll not.
Rufus. You aint as good as you think.
