This album is a breath of fresh air. It shows the current trends for soul and Duffy certainly stands pround with the likes of Amy Winehouse.

Strong vocals and superb backing on all the tracks, Rock Ferry being a powerful song on the album that make you ears perk up with joy.

All in all a must purchase.

Peace and love.

Very good but not outstanding. This really sounds like something that would have been released 40 years ago which makes this very unique for it's time.
There are no bad songs but there are the obvious standout tracks which include Mercy[obviously], Warwick Avenue, Distant Dreamer & finally Stepping Stone[the best track].
What I would say to anybody thinking of buying this is don't expect an album full on Mercy's [if you get my drift]. There's a lot of slow tracks here however they're the kind of slow tracks that demand your attention.
This is a solid first album which has potential for improvement on what will hopefully be a very long music career. I believe this artist is one to watch.

Unbelieveable album, never been in to this kind of music myself but this is certainly a taste of something great, really enjoyed and 100% recommend this album to any all around music fan.

Customer rating: 3 out of 5 stars Great voice, not so great album.

I heard 'Mercy' and I loved it; I still do. I waited for her album to be released, and was ultimately disappointed. Her voice is fantastic, but the sound of the album is too samey. The standout tracks are:

Mercy
Stepping Stone

Apart from that, it's all a bit boring and samey. Her lyrics and vocals are great, it's just the music that needs to be more upbeat. Still worth a try if you like 'Mercy' - but but warned - the album sounds nothing like the single.

Customer rating: 5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Album

Just a fantastic Album. I love all the tracks on the album. What a brilliant Singer and Song Writer. Duffy's voice is amazing and very soulful. Such a talented Lady. You go girl. Can't wait for the nest album.

Customer rating: 3 out of 5 stars Get over yourselves.

I disagree with lots of peoples comments.
Firstly, the album IS good. Good production, good voice, clever(ish) lyrics etc etc.
As first albums go, it's fine. Easy listening, a bit samey at times, but still quite interesting.
As with most artists, it is her second album we should be looking out for. Bound to be more pop and upbeat.

Obviously some commenters have been reading the bad press from people like Estelle (get over it Estelle, we didn't like you before and we don't like you now) who is desperately trying to break the UK market (again) by attacking all white, female soul singers

In the words of the WineJew, "back to black" Pah! It's all about blonde Welsh girls. :)

Over.

The album is fantastic. Soulful, velvety tones. At times melancholy and others more upbeat. Having just seen Duffy live I was blown away by her seemingly effortless, powerful voice and lyrics

Customer rating: 2 out of 5 stars YAWN...

This is NOT soul - this album is melancholy, mediocre and more boring than waiting for a flight at Heathrows terminal 5. I have a boundless taste in music, but I'm sorry, Duffy is Duff. Mercy - catchy souly type pop song, the rest of the album is basically her own suicide note. I'd like to think that she is jumping on the Amy Winehouse bandwagon - but I can't because Amy has a style that hasn't been captured for decades and is a time bomb of insecurities and amazing talent, Duffy is just utter rubbish and I'm sure she won't be around in the next 5 years. I bought this album from here and sold it back 1 day later - a total waste of money.

Heard Mercy and part of her new single just before i bought this album. Best album ive bought in a long time. Warwick Avenue is constantly played as well as serious and mercy..distant dreamer and syrup and honey..see, i know them all. Defintely worth every penny. Refreshing to finally hear some lyrics that have meaning and a fresh funky voice to sing them

Customer rating: 5 out of 5 stars Open minded people only!

It frustrates me that all Commercial music lovers just wanted an album full of songs like Mercy. Well, thats not what albums are about. They are about an artist showing you all sides of themselves & having some soul & this album is jam-packed with soul. With fantastic motown vibed tracks like "Warwick Avenue" & "Serious" & some haunting ballads like "Scared" & "Distant Dreamer", this album has it all. Really shocked that some reviewers were not open minded enough to get it. Seriously people, buy it if u like music, not if u like Mercy!
