Oracular Spectacular

Lots of really cool songs on here, you've got the three singles, Time to Pretend, Kids and Electric Feel. The rest are also really good, a great mix of guitary songs thats got a late 60s sound to it. I'm really glad i got this one. It takes a few listens to really get into the non singles but overall a good album, and MGMT a have got lots of potential for making even better albums.
MGMT - The band to look out for!

After loving 'Time to pretend' i decided to listen to the album. I now find myself prefering the other songs on there than the ones usually played on the radio. However after reading other reviews i would advise you before buying the album to try and listen to the other songs first (i reccomend spotify for this, its free and really easy to use) befor buying it off the back of the ones on the radio.

MGMT achieve in this album, what all new bands would hope to do in their first release, which is to create anthems. Not just anthems for anyone in particular, but for anyone and everyone wishing to let themselves get inside their music.

A blend of electronic sequencing and dancing guitars create what is one of the best albums (in terms of content) of 2008. There is more than enough here to throw on your car stereo and keep you content for weeks, months, and hopefully until the earth is engulfed by the sun. Because in truth, with tracks like Time to Pretend, Electric Feel & Kids, you will always come back to this album... but not neccesarily because of the album itself...

See, that is where the problem lies, and why this album will never reach a 5 star target, and achieve classic status. This album is full of brilliant songs, wonderful music, Weekend Wars, Pieces of What, and of Moons, Birds, & Monsters, all fill you with what is just essentially pure noise that will never fail to keep you entertained.

The songs are what you will come back to, but the album itself falters at a few points. The continuity of the tracks is more makeshift than anything, most probably down to the fact that the album is a hard one to piece together anyway. With such different music from track to track, it is entertaining, but even Beck can manage to make genre follow genre, and sadly, the Brooklyn duo falter a bit there. Songs like The Youth just don't seem to reach what they could reach, and falter just as you wish them, you emplore them, to reach their goal.

In sumary, this is a great album to own, if for the songs on it that will make such a difference to you. Kids is a contender for song of the year (in my humble opinion) as is Time to Pretend. Having experienced MGMT at Glastonbury, their live performances actually transformed every single song they played into something huge, something massive. However, in album form, they falter, at a cost that may be greater than previously thought.

You need MGMT in your life, and I don't think you should wait for a 'Best of' in ten years time. And enjoy it! It's something different, just lay down any preconceptions you have, and just enjoy!

fantastic...really...from the first listen i was hooked..ok they look like a bunch of college hippies who have obviously chosen their influences well mixed them together and spat them back out onto vinyl...but with the single " time to pretend" they hit you straight in the stomach...it reminds me on first listen very much like when i listened to the first arcade fire album...something different that felt like it meant something...the best track in my opinion is "weekend wars" a revelation on first listen that never gets old...and he sounds a bit like bob dylan...buy it for a change...buy it for something perculiar but also pretty...buy it because i said so...okay!

Bought this album on a chance after hearing 'Time to Pretend' on the radio. I think some of the stuff is really good here but the first 5 tracks are, for me, the best - track 5 being the utterly fantastic 'Kids'. That's possibly one of my favourite tracks of 2008 and it's an absolute gem. The album gets a bit flat after that peak, but overall it's still a good listen.
