From the tongue in cheek origin song "Time to pretend" to the spaced "Of moons birds and monsters" and right through the Prince-like funk of "Electric Feel" it is hard to grasp MGMT's debut. It must of been hard for those journo's so intent on hyping them up to the point where everyone's expecting a masterpeice, because they must have had trouble pigeonholing them into a genre. Indie-prog? Epic funk? Flaming lips copyists?

It is important to abandon these thoughts before listening to the album, because it flys through all of these during the album, sometimes swapping mid-song. "TIme to pretend" is a great opener, proably the most radio friendly song on the album, yet still weird beyond the top ten, but the other gems only unravel over a few listens. Yes, it's all very fun, but they can be serios too, "Weekend Wars" and "Peices of what" are sadder and still brilliant and "Of Moons, Birds and monsters" is a monstrous live closer that flits through different song ideas melding them into a spectacular.

MGMT have made one of the only stand out records of 2008 so far, they are very different to any other new bands coming out at the moment, similarities to FLaming Lips are justified in the OTT moments, but thats all part of the fun, one of the songs shows the lead singers voice to low in the mix and drony, "4th dimensional traqnsition" and this is the only weaker track, that prevents it from the 5-star rating for me, but overall definately worth a listen, especially if your feeling a little adventurous.
