I had never really heard of this band before seeing them on tv at Glastonbury and that was only after Nathan Followill the Kings of Leon drummer said he was gonna go and watch their set..... The album is Good, there are standout tracks like Time too pretend, electric feel, weekend wars, kids..... I have found 2 weak songs on the album.... 4th Dimensional Transition & Future reflections though these may well grow on me.....
All in all a very good debut album.

Top 100 Music Reviewer
Pronounced 'management' this is the debut LP for New York based MGMT. The album is sort of space rock and influenced heavily by David Bowie amongst others.
I downloaded the album on the strength of seeing them at Glastonbury and everyone going ape for them.
The album is a very good one but is very much front-loaded. The first 5 tracks are highly enjoyable but of the remaining 5 tracks only 'The Handshake' really stands out for me.
It's worth getting purely for the first half of the album though which is flawless. The other tracks aren't bad ones, I'd just put them into the average - good category.
Like the beatles plugged in and on speed

Its very psycodelic(however you spell it lol). Its lyrics tense and taught and protest. Cracking. Not as good as i was expecting though.
makes me feel like a hippy but i like it

fantastic...really...from the first listen i was hooked..ok they look like a bunch of college hippies who have obviously chosen their influences well mixed them together and spat them back out onto vinyl...but with the single " time to pretend" they hit you straight in the stomach...it reminds me on first listen very much like when i listened to the first arcade fire album...something different that felt like it meant something...the best track in my opinion is "weekend wars" a revelation on first listen that never gets old...and he sounds a bit like bob dylan...buy it for a change...buy it for something perculiar but also pretty...buy it because i said so...okay!
Definately a grower

From the tongue in cheek origin song "Time to pretend" to the spaced "Of moons birds and monsters" and right through the Prince-like funk of "Electric Feel" it is hard to grasp MGMT's debut. It must of been hard for those journo's so intent on hyping them up to the point where everyone's expecting a masterpeice, because they must have had trouble pigeonholing them into a genre. Indie-prog? Epic funk? Flaming lips copyists?
It is important to abandon these thoughts before listening to the album, because it flys through all of these during the album, sometimes swapping mid-song. "TIme to pretend" is a great opener, proably the most radio friendly song on the album, yet still weird beyond the top ten, but the other gems only unravel over a few listens. "The Youth" has a brilliant chorus, sung high over swirling intruments, a happy tone resonates throughtout most of the album, "TIme to pretend" jokes around with cliches, "Electic feel" is effortlessly cool and danceable in spite of the fact it should have come out in the 80's, "Kids has a great rising feel to it, in a way similair to LCD soundsystem's Tribulations, but covered by a prog band. Yes, it's all very fun, but they can be serios too, "Weekend Wars" and "Peices of what" are sadder and still brilliant and "Of Moons, Birds and monsters" is a monstrous live closer that flits through different song ideas melding them into a spectacular.
MGMT have made one of the only stand out records of 2008 so far, they are very different to any other new bands coming out at the moment, similarities to FLaming Lips are justified in the OTT moments, but thats all part of the fun, one of the songs shows the lead singers voice to low in the mix and drony, "4th dimensional traqnsition" and this is the only weaker track, that prevents it from the 5-star rating for me, but overall definately worth a listen, especially if your feeling a little adventurous.
A MUST FOR ALL INDIE FANS
