The Last Shadow Puppets is the working collaboration of Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner and The Rascals' Miles Kane. Brought together by a mutual appreciation for Sixties Pop, The Last Shadow Puppets have acted on their greatest influences and produced the Mercury Prize nominated, nostalgia inducing epic, The Age Of The Understatement.
Dramatic from beginning to end The Age Of The Understatement revives the dark, orchestra led grandeur of Scott Walker's legendary 1969 album Scott 4 and throws in Bowie style symphonic pop for good measure. The opening title track, a Spaghetti-Western themed explosion of galloping guitar strings and pounding timpani rhythms, opens an expansive and lavish sound that never threatens to dip as Arcade Fire arranger Owen Pallett conducts the 22-piece London Metropolitan Orchestra over Turner and Kane's powerful yet delicate entwining vocals. While the majority of the album is heavy, electric led tracks such as the full blooded 'Separate and Ever Deadly', it is the softer acoustic based ballads of 'My Mistakes Were Made for You' and 'The Meeting Place' that shine and add much needed contrast.
At times it is impossible to distinguish between Turner and Kane's input. Their voices and guitars marry together so well that it is hard to believe that these two ever played without each other. Although there are apparent shades of each other's respective bands in certain tracks, Rascals notorious vivid guitar solos on 'I Don't Like You Anymore' and Arctic Monkeys' poignant story-telling lyrics on 'The Time Has Come Again', the album as a whole could never pass as being the work solely of either frontman: this is The Last Shadow Puppets.

Without a doubt the best musical purchase I have made in a very long time!
I am in love with every song on the album, some more than others of course, but whenever I need too feel better, I throw this on and instantly I'm a happy face :)
At first I was of the belief that Alex Turner never should have taken off Arctic Monkeys time to do this, but now I'm very glad!! It takes a listen or two to get used to, but when you get used to it, you love it!
Brilliant!

It takes a few plays to get used to the different style of music produced by Alex Turner, but it grows on you rapidly and now i can't stop playing it. Best CD this year by far!
