Play.com Review

18 months in the making, West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum is the much-anticipated new album from indie rockers Kasabian. With their stunning self-titled debut in 2004 and 2006's number 1, Empire, behind them, the critically acclaimed Leicestershire five piece return with an album glimmering with newfound electronic and funk influences.

The distorted, swaggering opening guitars of the opening track, 'Underdog', get the album off to a familiar start. But it's not long before the influence of hip-hop/electronica producer Dan The Automator (famed for his work on the first Gorillaz album) becomes apparent. The bass-heavy 'Swarfiga' finds the band entering experimental territory, whilst the dark, electro undertones of single 'Fire' soon erupt into an edgy, dance chorus. The beautiful 'Where Did All The Love Go?' is a string-laden epic demonstrating a sensitive, almost fragile side to the quintet's often brash playing, whilst the laid-back, slow tempo of 'Thick As Thieves' fits comfortably alongside the regular bursts of the cutting rock guitars we've come to expect from one of the UK's most exhilarating indie bands. Popular American starlet Rosario Dawson duets on the glorious 'West Ryder Silver Bullet', a contrast to the storming 'Fast Fuse', a song which may be familiar to computer gamers as it features prominently on FIFA 09. The chaotic 'Vlad The Impaler' is a turbo-charged rock anthem and an album highlight - undoubtedly one of Kasabian's finest moments in their already impressive history.

Whilst never dismissing their indie guitar roots, Kasabian have successfully embraced new ground with their third album. The hip-hop and electronica elements have added a confident, funky edge to their work, and as a result West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum is arguably their most exciting release to date.

West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum is also available in a Special Edition CD & DVD .

A couple of the tracks on the new album have been out for 18 months on a obscure 10" vinyl and Japanese import. namely "fast fuse" & "thick as thieves" which are both excellent.
Fast fuse is probably my favourite Kasabian song ever made & has great sing along lyrics "ooh baby I was born...with a fast fuse singer to abuse etc etc" . This wouldn't sound out of place on a Tarratino film
"Thick as thieves" is a more laid back Beatlesque type song that chuggs along.
other highlights I've heard so far is "fire" which also sounds excellent with a great riff.
seeing them live in Leeds last night did indicate the album will be an eclectic mix of sing along anthems with some trippy sounds.

all in all this is set to be huge.
bonus marks for the great title "The West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum"

 Brilliant.

Serge Pizzorno is really coming on as a songwriter. There are some tunes on this song to say the least. I stand by Kasabian being the world's leading Riff creator's in the world today. Then they pull out some real different yet fantastic songs like Thick as Thieves and West Ryder Silver Bullet; really trying to do something different. Stand out tracks for me are Underdog, Fast Fuse and Take aim although that's not to say the rest of the album isn't fantastic. Really worth a listen to; this is easily one of my favourite albums of all time and i couldn't recommend it more. Keep it coming.

Easily one of the best albums I've bought this year, and in my opinion their best work so far. You can see they've taken their time over this record and taken influences from such greats as The Doors and the like, and even if you don't like some of their new sounds you have to sit back and admire their creativity, both instrumentally and lyrically. 5 out of 5. Genius.

Brilliant - Best Kasabian album yet!
