The Smiths aren't going to be everyone's favourites, as Morrissey's style isn't suited to most. But when it comes to still being a major influence to new bands, they're right up there with The Stones, Who, Beatles, Pistols, Bowie and other British giants of the music world. They really were that important then, and remain that important now to young bands who want to be part of the rock/indie scene.
Lyrically inventive, and musically gifted, The Smiths brought their own distinctive sound to the 80's party that was then dominated by huge pop groups like Duran Duran, Frankie, Wham, and Spandau Ballet. And as we can see by this latest 'Best Of' compilation, their music will no doubt continue to go on and grow with new generations.

If you look around, you will find a few Smiths 'Best Of's' on the market, with only one or two slight changes to the track listings, but whatever one you decide to go for, I can recommend any one of them. However, if you really want to hear some of their very best music, I strongly suggest you also own The Queen Is Dead, Hatful Of Hollow, Strangeways Here We Come and Louder Than Bombs.
In the light of many 80's bands re-grouping and hitting the road again these days, it's highly unlikely that The Smiths ever will. But for whatever the future holds for them or you, it must include this CD.
