Special Features

  • Martin Carthy's fourth album and third collaboration with fiddler Dave Swarbrick, 1967's BYKER HILL, is representative of the pair's '60s material. This typically excellent Topic reissue features fully-remastered sound and, as usual, detailed and often humorous liner notes about the origins and history of each of these traditional ballads.
Interestingly, BYKER HILL also contains one non-traditional tune, Bertolt Brecht's "The Wife of the Soldier", which fits in with the other 13 tracks much better than you might expect. Steeleye Span later did "The Wife of the Soldier", as well as the Sussex ballad "Gentleman Soldier" in the mid-'70s, when Carthy was in the band. As always, Carthy's voice and guitar and Swarbrick's fiddle are superlative.
