Play.com Review

Iconic indie legend Morrissey presents his ninth solo studio album, Years of Refusal. Bursting at the seams with venomous, punk-fuelled tirades, this expansive, gutsy and nostalgia-inducing record demonstrates the sublime lyrical dexterity of The Smiths' former frontman in formidable fashion.

Very little has changed from the setup that brought together Morrissey's highly acclaimed comeback albums, You Are The Quarry and Ringleader Of The Tormentors. His backing band is still The Tormentors and the muscular rock approach remains intact. However, with Years Of Refusal something that had previously gone unnoticed seems to click into place. Generating a spectacular spark, the musical quality exceeds much of the previous material and is harder, packing more of a punch than before. Whether it be that the band are more comfortable with one another after extensive touring, or simply that the potency of their leader's increasingly gritty, angst-drenched lyrics have fuelled this fiercer sound, it is safe to say that this is Morrissey's most entertaining and savage record since 1994's celebrated Vauxhall and I. From the stormy opener 'Something Is Squeezing My Skull', it is clear that Moz has returned, and is in the finest of form. With full throttle bitterness and spite, the song opens the album with a driving force that leaves you champing at the bit for the remaining tracks. What follows is everything you would expect and desire from 'The Pope of Mope'. Whilst 'I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris' tremors with pensiveness, 'One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell' tackles the notion of death, before the heart-rendering 'I'm OK By Myself' closes the record in a true Smiths-esque, lovelorn style. Ferocious in delivery, the tracks strike with unquestionable vigour. Breaking cautiously from subjects of anger to desperation with impeccable timing, Morrissey showcases a renewed strength both in his vocals and himself.

Produced by You Are The Quarry contributor Jerry Finn, Years Of Refusal benefits from being recorded live in the studio, and has a pure and organic energy that is both urgent and increasingly intimate. Offering unexpected touches that engage and satisfy in equal measure, this score-settling album demonstrates the remarkable talent of Morrissey with enough vitality and fire to become an instant classic.

Years Of Refusal is also available in a CD & DVD Edition.

Thanks to a promo copy arriving earlier than I thought, I'm very pleased to tell you that this Cd is great.

I'm hoping theres some more great things on the Dvd as a little bonus for the 16th Feb release of YEARS OF REFUSAL

So the 1st track is a new live favourite from the shows he's done in the past few months, and the list of pharmaceuticals he cites reminds me off bumbling round Bangkok with my best mate Mick at 5am after Diazaepam & Mohito partys last year!

Track 2 is another fave from the live shows, quite dark...sounds a bit like Maladjusted era Moz...'safe & sheltered in our graves'.

Track 3, I'm sure will be played near the start of his new tour, it's got some keys running through it & some nice strumming.
If you are watching him sing this live later in the year
get ready to catch the shirt he throws into the crowd!!!

Track4 the mellow Paris song, another one thats been doing the rounds for some time at his live shows, this will be a single for sure a great song from a great songwriter.

Track5 we know this from the Best of that came out earlier in the year,
a self loving ,Cocky swagger of a song.
Some thumping bass, this song is GREAT

'you don't like me but you love me;
either way you're wrong,
you're gonna miss me when I'm gone'

What a tombstone carving that would be !!!

Track6 reminds you of the real 50's types of song that the Last Shadow Puppets off did'nt quite capture for me...

And like the Carol in this song Im a child of 1975. Nice brass section at the end & thumping drums.
There will be Flamenco dancing in the Streets on rainy Salford.

Track7 again from the best off cd, a true great Moz track....
It spoke volumes to me this song, and I have truly grown up now.
Thankyou Moz.

Track8 follows on very well from 7, kind of like a reprise of the subject matter,
This song added to the volumes that track 7 spoke...again with a great bit of brass at the end.

Track9 at the moment is my favourite song on the album, it's like he has been hurt & has picked himself back up & will not be hurt again.

All the gifts that they gave can't compare in any way to the love I am now giving to you,
right here,
right now,
on the floor.

Go on the Moz !!! You saucy devil.

The Piercing effects meets that Moz wail...
and this is the amazing result of that meeting.

The splash of the cymbals at the end is awesome.

On Track10 he brings the mood right down, you could have heard a pin drop the 1st time I heard this song. Your aware that there's only two songs left, but I wish this one could have lasted more & there were less effects & more Moz at the end of the track.

Track11 & he is lamenting the loss of his teenage years, or is he ?
I'm sure he would feel a lot more happier now, I know I do
so lets Live & Let live Moz.

Track12....the final track, he's telling us he is ok....
No matter what we think he's a big lad & he can look after himself.
Im sure this will be played live just before he does an encore.

Roll on the live shows in 09, Roll on the Dvd...
& Just Roll up & Listen to The Moz !!!!

Just keep Writing songs like this please Morrissey.

Thankyou !!!!!

 A definite grower

Like one of the reviewers here, on first listen I thought it was another weak offering, like Tormentors. I have persevered and now this has grown on me immensely. I now think it is one of the best Mozza solo albums ever...... on a par with Quarry and Vauxhall. Buy it and play it loud.

i will probably receive abuse for this...

(Re-edit of original review)
Many months ago I wrote a pretty bad review. Views along the line of "This is a bold statement but this could very well be his worst album bar kill uncle". etc etc. But in those few months I have warmed to the album slightly. It's an Ok album. It's not Morrissey I have the problem with on this album.

His voice is pretty bloody good on this. And his lyircs are still a force to be reckoned with at times. But, I hate to say it (what with the unfortunate death of Jerry Finn), I just feel this album is produced in a fashion, completely at a tangent as to how it should have been. Musically it's all a bit 'samey'; the guitars for one are not adding anything particularly new other than a bit of a punch. Which is a bit of a shame really considering the immense talents of all musicians involved. I just....oh I dont know! I'm just not mad about the production on it. But maybe I'm just so in love with the production on the likes of Viva Hate & Vauxhall.....

To sum up, its not as bad as I orignally thought.

 A sparkling return to form!

This is Morrisseys best album since "Vauxhall and I" and "Your Aresenal". Every track is killer.

This album has to be a five star because it has 'i'm throwing my arms around paris' on it. If the other songs are as good then we are in for a treat from the table of mozzalini. See track details below.
