Play.com Review

Brimming with epic, arena-sized anthems, Only By the Night is the expansive fourth album from Kings of Leon. The release of Kings of Leon's third album Because of the Times showed a noticeable change in sound for the Tennessee Indie quartet. The rough-edged country rock of their debut album Youth and Young Manhood was replaced by a plethora of cleaned up new-wave tracks and it is a progression that continues with Only By the Night.

The tidal wave of glitchy guitars on opening number,'Closer', segues perfectly into the sludgy swamp-rock of 'Crawl', melding Led-Zeppelin-style crunch with experimental guitar buzz, the tracks flex the band's rock 'n' roll muscle to great effect. Chart-topping single, 'Sex on Fire', fronts a succession of songs with meteoric choruses that are tailored to singer Caleb Followill's raspy, contagious vocals. Tracks 'Use Somebody' and 'Manhattan' see guitarist Matthew Followill cloak his guitar riffs in reverb, as bassist Jared Followill takes the spotlight sporadically, popping up for quick melodic fills before ducking back in to the mix. As the band experiment with texture and structure in the hauntingly exposed 'Cold Desert', it is the steady and unique drumming patterns of Nathan Followill that ensure that Kings of Leon's recognisable style is very much alive.

Kings of Leon have grown further in stature, confidence, and ability with each album and this release doesn't buck that trend. Taking its lead from the post-punk primitivism of Because of the Times, Only By the Night sees Kings of Leon develop on their adept style further by slowing down track tempo and attacking new instrumental structures. With U2 inspired lines that open up space for sounds to prowl and insulate, Kings of Leon have produced an accomplished new album that delivers on a grand scale.

awesome...you wont regret getting this. ignore - firstoffice

This album is truely a great album. I have all there albums and this is a great addition. I totally dont agree with firstofficerp's review and do not understand why he gave it 1 star when admitting to liking the first 4 tracks and then track 11 is very similar in style to the 1 and 4.

So far its 29 against 1.....do the math people....buy this album.

Be open minded with this i will say. Caleb does express himself more vocally than before and i have only 2 words to say and those are - "about time" (in a good way)

It opens up the future for more great songs and i cant wait to hear them live again (december ;-))

reason for the 2 stars is.

Only 2 tracks are good. And the rest are just average. I love kol. But with this album, they gone more mainstream and that has caused them to lose their spark. Its sad really. Because all the break-thru bands out there. Have move from what made them stand out to modern day average band.
Hopefully they will go back to what made them kol. Right now there kol average.
Sadness i may add.

 very poor for KOL

When i heared that kol where working on a new album i couldn't wait but now i've got my hands on it, it's very poor. I have been a fan from day one. All those who rate this album a 5 stars don't know what their on about. The best kol album by far is 'aha shake heartbreak' only_by_the_night is slow compared to there other stuff. Hope that they can go back to there older ways.

If, like me, you have been a KOL fan for some time, you may well find yourself rather under-whelmed by their latest offering. The album starts promisingly enough, but, I'm afraid to say, gets progressively worse, in fact boring, as the album wears on. The band have made a marked departure from their sound that set them apart in the first two albums, and the experimentation found in the third album has not been built on in the slightest. I am sad to say that KOL have simply become yet another run-of-the-mill, dull and uninspiring band. You will hear certain "music lovers" rave about this album, but I bet not one of these so called fans ever owned any KOL pre-Sex On Fire.

Aiming for a run in the top 10 singles chart may bring in the pay cheques, and earn some shallow fans along the way, but a long lasting rock outfit that stands the test of time, they are not.
