Anyone who witnessed Brian's performances on the South Bank of both Smile and That Lucky Old Sun will know just how fantastic it is to have this artist back where he should be - on stage performing, writing music, loving music again.
That Lucky Old Sun doesn't arrive with the same weight of expectation as Smile, and perhaps that's a good thing.
The music, as ever, is very strong with melodies that echo between tracks, fabulous Beach Boys style harmonies and the mysterious lyrics that we have come to expect of Brian's collaborations with Van Dyke Parks. The musicianship of the backing band (still based around The Wondermints) remains excellent.
The format is a series of rounds interspersed with narrative on California life. The album was inspired by Louis Armstrong's recording of "That Lucky Old Sun" and shares the song's sense of quiet optimism. This album is practically guaranteed to bring some sunshine into your life.
