Bloc Party make a rapturous return with their third full-length album, Intimacy. Continuing to stretch the boundaries of indie rock with their eclectic mix of angular sonic synths and delicate pop structures, Bloc Party present in Intimacy a confident album that is brimming with intellect and originality.
Combining the jittery art rock of their debut album, Silent Alarm, with the fuller soundscapes of A Weekend In The City, Intimacy sees Bloc Party deliver an album that blends electronic broken beats with shredding guitar lines and powerful melodies. The opening tracks of `Ares' and single `Mercury' are synth laden, heavy songs in which Bloc Party venture in to a new drum and bass inspired sound. Continuing lyrically with themes introduced in its predecessors, Intimacy sees singer and chief songwriter Kele Okereke express his brooding tales of anxiety, desire, and frustration with distinctive and layered vocals. As Intimacy progresses in a surge of delayed guitar riffs and complex drumming patterns, Bloc Party's familiar sound surfaces. The closing tracks of `Better Than Heaven' and `Ion Square' are signature Bloc Party slow-burners that, much like Silent Alarm's standout single `So Here We Are', smoulder with lyrical sensitivity and climax with crashing finales.
Co-produced by the previous albums' respective producers, Jacknife Lee and Paul Epworth, Intimacy has the raw feel of a live album teamed with precise and intriguing instrumental structures. By fusing the technical, fast, heavy guitar work of Silent Alarm with the brooding exploring songs of A Weekend In The City, Bloc Party have delivered with Intimacy an album that progresses from their familiar sound to ambitiously break genre confinements.
