It's the soundtrack to the lives of people who feel that their existences need one, that their life is indeed a pale movie. These people feel that they have a kind of 60s throwback of optimism yet at the same time a gentle loneliness of the kind only the truly introspective can achieve. Some these tracks sum up the world when you look out of your bed-sit on a rainy Sunday morning when the phone won't ring. Others are themes for the days when you've just met someone who you feel you'll know forever & you will but they will never feel the same. These are songs that can inspire you or devastate you, sometimes in the same track. Their lyrics contain phrases that can burrow into your soul or can fly by like an ice cream wrapper dropped by a girl who wants to be friends but will never love you.

Then there is Sarah's singing. She knows, she just knows. There is knowledge in her voice that can either cut through you like a knife or wrap itself around you like a warm sweater. The band then balance this tightrope performance around some fantastic tunes and production. 'Hobart Paving' is simply one of the ten saddest pop songs ever recorded, while 'He's On The Phone' is pop music at its most intelligent and joyous best. And this is all brought together on this compilation by some of the best remastering I've ever heard. (To paraphrase Gerald the Gorilla.). Its a shame this didn't arrive in time for Christmas as the packaging is superb too and very informative about the band.
However, star off for not including their pumped up, no nonsense cover of 'Stormtrooper In Drag' which contains Sarah's sexist vocal performance (Stop It...), 'The Process' and 'Groveley Road' which should also be on here. Right then, I'm off. Got to put the dinner on for the kids, worm the cat and get ready for work at the fishmongers. Like to see them make a song out of that existence.
