Play.com Review

From a band clearly relishing the opportunity to experiment without compromising their quality of song writing, Tonight is the third album from Franz Ferdinand. The monumental success of their self-titled debut, swiftly followed by You Could Have It So Much Better, firmly established the Glasgow quartet as chart favourites. After a two year rest, Tonight combines the energy of their earlier work with a newfound sense of musical exploration.

As if they'd never been away, hit single `Ulysses' launches the release with a stylish disco rhythm and a rousing sing-along chorus, likely to impress both new and long-term admirers. 'No You Girls' is equally infectious, but the stop-start rhythm of `Turn It On' and the garage-influenced `What She Came For' offer new substance to the established Franz sound. The fuzzy electronica of `Can't Stop Feeling' is a radical departure, but the bass-heavy groove of `Bite Hard' is likely to be a live favourite. Perhaps the biggest surprise is 'Lucid Dreams' - comprising of nearly eight minutes of darkly psychedelic musical fantasies, the track is unpredictable yet somehow retains a jubilant pop sensibility. Meanwhile, the glorious instant pop gem `Send Him Away' offers a faithful nod back to The Kinks, before the album ends on the folk influenced `Katherine Kiss Me'.

Striding positively into new musical landscapes, with snappy guitars often overlooked in favour of big beats and layered keyboards, there is no question that Franz Ferdinand are a band keen to push the boundaries of the catchy pop/rock song format. Yet, with their trademark frantic energy and the signature vocals of Alex Kapranos, Tonight remains satisfyingly danceable, and, as a result, could easily be considered the perfect third album.

You will want to dance like you've never danced before

Upon releasing their first album, Franz Ferdinand claimed that they wanted to make 'dance music for girls'. I'm not sure about the 'for girls' part, but this is the album that's come closest to being dance music.
Ulysses kicks things off in stunning fashion, with Alex's whispered vocals giving the track a great sound, before blasting into it's 'la la la la' chorus
Other highlights include Turn It On - another disco infused song. No You Girls which is just too catchy for it's own good, and in my opinion, should be the next single. Live Alone is another sure fire single that's chorus will remain lodged in your head. And then comes Lucid Dreams. Many of you will have heard the pre-release of this song, and for those of you hoping for it to be slightly better produced, if that, think again. It's been totally re-worked into a total indie trance tune, and it's spectacular. It's also now doubled in length to just under eight minutes, the final four minutes being a pure acid trance instrumental of epic proportions. The albums masterpiece without a doubt
So why doesn't this album get five stars? There are some songs, namely Send Him Away, Can't Stop Feeling and Dream Again that lack a certain something. Good songs, but just don't hold your attention like the rest of the album. And Katherin Kiss Me may be a little too close to Eleanor Put Your Boots on for some people.
Non the less, this is a brilliant album, that has it's sights set on a firm path, and destroys that path as it takes it.

This is more exciting than i had hoped for and very much worth the wait. It sounds like pure Franz Ferdinand but a band that really know who they are and are now at ease with taking time to make a really artistic, dark, funky masterpiece. It kicks of with 'Ulysses" and says pretty clearly that they've found "a new way". Lucid Dreams is a 7 minute very psychedelic track: Strawberry Fields at a Glasgow disco.
Tonight is a reminder of how fresh FF were and now they've become slightly dangerous and dark. This is the real thing - Tonight!

Having been lucky enough to have heard these tracks aired for the first time in the tiny Macbeth Pub back in June this year, this album heralds the welcome return of Franz Ferdinand.
The album is slower than their 2005 number one You Could Have It So Much Better, but the songs have Franz Ferdinand stamped all over them - in particular their first planned release 'Ulysses'; a song about getting stoned when there's little else to do. Dirty scuzzy guitar is matched with the usual Franz style chords and strong drums and bass.
'Lucid Dreams', having been used on MaddenNFL 2009 and released as a scratched record on the official website shows new direction with a mix of funk and rock drumming with obscure lyrics.
The funky 'Kiss Me Katherine'; Gentler paced 'Send Him Away'; the thrumming 'Bite Hard' and mad rock-out ending to 'What She Came For' are all included after their warm reception from audiences this summer when the band roadtested the songs. My only regret is that the magnificent 'New Thrill' was left off the finished article.
'Live Alone' was debuted at a gig in London Club Durr last night and will, I'm sure, also become a favourite.

Welcome back boys - you've been gone too long :)

From the early plays of 'Ulysses' and the couple of tracks that are available on YouTube, the new material sounds brilliant. It's different from the old stuff, more synths but the same ridiculously catchy hooks as we're on the first two albums. As a big Franz fan, I'm impressed with the new work and really looking forwards to the release of Tonight. Thank God Franz are back!!
